Craziest Fashion Moments of 2020
12.29.20
The year of 2020 is coming to end, so I thought it would be fun to close out this week with some countdowns of our own. We will start today with the craziest fashion moments of 2020. These will be the top ten most jaw-dropping looks we’ve seen. From shoes, to entire outfits, to outstandingly beautiful to outstandingly questionable. Fashion has become a major factor in music, sports and the culture overall, which is what makes fashion such an important part of For The Soule, as we talk about new sneakers and new looks each and every week on the blog. Without further ado, let’s get into the top ten craziest fashion moments of 2020.
This is a new moment, but it has to make our top ten. Montrezl Harrell, of the Los Angeles Lakers shows up to his Christmas game rocking the Reebok Question Mid ‘Abominable Snowman.’ The Question Mid has done work for Reebok the basketball courts this year, thanks to Allen Iverson’s collaboration and really great influencer marketing. This version really made people pause on the court, with the ice blue laces, and crazy fur coming from all pockets of the shoe, representing the Abominable Snowman, himself. I am not sure we have seen anyone rock fur sneakers on the basketball court before. Do they sweat!? Is it heavy!? Distracting to others?! Are they even legal!? Anthony Davis, Harrell’s teammate, was micced up on this day. As Harrell went to go pick up Davis after a play, he spoke right into the mic telling the cameras to get a close up of Harrell’s sneakers. “You different” he told Harrell. Different indeed, as these take the win for craziest hooping sneakers on Christmas Day.
Kanye’s Twitter rants could definitely make it into the top ten most entertaining controversies of the year, and with those rants, came the 2020 Yeezy boot. There were plenty of rants about running for President, owning all his master to the point where he leaked the entirety of his contract, and even when we thought finding about his creative process would be most interesting and delightful, we were outrageously shocked, yet again. Ye shared some images of landmarks and random things that inspired him. Then we received the image on the right. What looks like a dinosaur boot, or a giant brick with teeth to be worn on your foot. People were in shock that this shoe would even be wearable, and what would possess anyone to wear something like this. Ye later shared the 3D rendering of the boot, and it was debuted during New York Fashion Week. The final version has a bit of updates making it just a tad bit more subtle, but the teeth and brick-like nature of the boot is still one-hundred percent there.
While we are talking about Kanye West, let’s talk about his wife, Kim Kardashian. What in the Ninja Turtle, is this look?! This was Kim’s Christmas of 2020 look designed by Daniel Roseberry of Schiaparelli. Some say that the gown is a play on the Grinch, where her sister Kylie wore red latex insinuating she was the more merry one, being Mrs. Claus. In all reality, Kim’s gown was a moulded six pack leather bodice, a green silk velvet skirt, and oversized serpent pendant earrings. I found this to be pretty strange, first off, because the Grinch does not have abs. On the contrary, he is kind of fat. The two greens do not match at all in color nor materials, and while the earrings are pretty dope, what do snakes have to do with the Grinch other than being a symbol of some sort of trouble? Not to mention the fact that with her being the mother of several young children, I would assume she wants them to have a cherry Christmas and not one that the Grinch had stole. Though, the look is giving me Hulk more than anything. Truly a shocking choice for the holiday.
Gucci Mane and Keyshia Ka’oir have been applying pressure all year in their couples matching looks. Nothing beats their stunning, matching looks at Gucci Mane’s 40th birthday party that happened earlier this year in February. Gucci wore a silky, shiny, blush pink suit with rhinestone loafs. Keyshia matched his color, with a complete feather-filled dress. The color was unexpected and popped greatly, while both materials were eye-catching. The remainder of the party was required to dress in black, so the couple stood out no matter who walked in the door. Gucci is becoming a icon in the fashion space since cleaning up his act over the past couple of years, and never really disappoints when it comes to look flashy and dressing up for events.
Not only did Nicki Minaj shock her fans with her pregnancy, but she did not hold back in her photoshoot, either. Nicki is known for rocking some crazy looks in her music videos, from the outfits, to the shoes, to the hair. For Nicki’s maternity photoshoot, she shared several different looks filled with bright colors, ruffles and embroidery, and plenty of bling. The first look Nicki wears a bright blue bun, a ruffled bra top with shoulder pads, a beaded mini skirt, high socks and some very flashy, very high, heels. The second look is a bright yellow curly bob, and an embroidered bikini. Nicki did the absolute most while wearing the absolute least in her maternity shoot. I would expect nothing less from the Barbz. Congrats on the new baby boy.
21 Savage’s themed birthday party was one of my personal favorite fashion moments this year. Everyone had to show up in their best 70s Gangsta looks, and they did not disappoint. From big wigs, flared pants, ruffles, spandex and more, the guys really showed out. Mulatto I gave best dress to at the party. She came through in an all cheetah look, with the big titled hat, cane, fur boots and all. Talk about the queen of the south if you ask me. This party will go down in hip-hop and fashion history of 2020, for sure.
I am not going to lie, this is a look that I have been hoping to forget about. The Weeknd had himself a 2020 for sure. While he may have already been hurt by 2021 and not being nominated for a single Grammy, he took home his fair share of awards this year. From the AMAs to VMAs and more, The Weeknd was very successful in awards, and shocking us with his looks. It appears The Weeknd wanted to show up dressed like the '“character” from his album. His first appearance, he wears a red suit with a black shirt and tie, but his face all bloodied up. During his next appearance, he is covered in face wrappings. Quite a dedication to the art, and storytelling of his project, for sure. However, a bit scary if you ask me.
Lizzo is a powerful woman in every sense of the word, and her sense of fashion does not stop there. Earlier this year, she wore a Hershey’s Chocolate bar inspired gown to the BRIT Awards. The dress quite literally imitates the chocolate wrapper itself, from name, ingredients, barcode and all. This could be paying homage to her skin tones, or simply eating whatever you please. During Lizzo’s performance, she stuck with the color theme and does what she does best, by wearing next to nothing in her leotard. Lizzo is a prime woman for body positivity, and does so by slaying in each and every outfit she puts on, no matter how shocking it may be to an outsider.
The Roc Nation Brunch is a moment where many hip-hop artists get together dressed up exquisitely. TI and Rihanna happened to match in yellow, while Rihanna complimented DJ Khaled in his baby blue suite. Rihanna is a fashion goddess, and TI I would say is one of the most slept on fashion icons in the male hip-hop space. The monochrome vibes from everyone is super early 2020, but I truly love this trend and do not want to see it end.
Offset’s Halloween costume has got to be one of the craziest things we have seen when it comes to fashion this year. He took it to another level not by just dressing up as The Mask, but by literally becoming, The Mask. The yellow suit and matching hat is sport on, with the two-toned loafers and cane to match. It appears Offset even took the time to get some prosthetics and airbrush work done, to completely transform his face to appear to be The Mask himself. This look definitely took some studying, time and dedication to get done, but boy did he pull it off. Costume look of the year, and definitely one of the most interesting fashion moments overall.
