Met Gala 2021
9.14.21
It is standard for the Met Gala to fall on the first Monday of every May, however with the pandemic, it was postponed. Thankfully, this year the occasion was able to be rescheduled, and during New York Fashion Week, why not up the stakes just a little more for the best looks of the night!? The theme for this year’s gala was “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” which was in celebration of the new Metropolitan Museum of Art which becomes open to the public on September 18th.
What is fun about the Met Gala, is not only is a fundraising event for the fantastic institution, but the theme each year is left completely up for interpretation. In fashion, art, music, many mediums, the story is left up to the consumer to interpret, and that is just what the Met Gala attendees are left to do upon reviewing each year’s theme. The guest lists are of course always super small and private. However, there were tons of huge names on the Red Carpet, and platforms that were able to stream some of the event as guests walked in displaying their looks for the first time.
Some people take the theme, and attempt to apply it quite literally to their looks. For example, Dan Levy who wore designer Loewe. The pants were a loose fitted design featuring an all over print of the globe. While the shirt appeared to be a polo embellished with details resembling the ocean, and a male-male couple printed which images of the map coloring in their silhouette, giant puffer sleeves were added, also painting an image of the globe. Carolyn B. Maloney also appeared in a head turning gown asking for women equal rights.
Some dress with a purpose to push the boundaries, and fashion norms. In a world where everyone dates to be different, how far is too far, on the runway?
Singer and song-writer, Kim Petras, supported designer Collina Strada and her love for horses. She literally wore a giant horse head on her chest. I do not really get it. I was not even sure if it was real at first. But, it is.
Cordae cleaned up well with a three-quarter length tan trench and black pants. His girlfriend, Naomi Osaka, came out loud wearing Louis Vuitton. Her dress consisted of a cool colored pattern with a red (warm color) bow. While the sleeves appeared to be a strap that wrapped around, a large, wide ruffled cape fell from her arms. Her hair-due, looked something like that Cynthia Barbie doll from Rugrats. Homage?
Lil Nas X wore a gold tin-man suit, with a chiseled body and all. This was one of three looks from Lil Nas throughout the night, all designed by Versace.
Erykah Badu always looks fantastic, and rather mysterious. This time, in Thom Browne. And speaking of mysterious, Kim Kardashian showed up in an all black catsuit, even covering her face. A man stood beside her in a similar look, causing people to question if they had attended the Met together. Word on the street is it was actually the designer of the label from her look at Balenciaga.
Others simply came dressed to impress. Saweetie wore a beautiful, yet revealing maroon bejeweled gown, while Megan Thee Stallion kept it cute and sweet. Billie Eilish, one of the chairs of the Met Gala, wore one of the most stunning, full, blush tone gowns I have ever seen, much different than her normal punk/streetwear vibes. It was giving Marilyn Monroe.
Virgirl Abloh appeared to be wearing a chicken hat on his head, Frank Ocean showed up with a green-faced baby, Ciara wore Russel Wilson’s Super Bowl Championship ring with bedazzled jersey dress, Pete Davidson wore a skirt and sunglasses inside, while A$AP Rocky and Rihanna came in their stunning comforter blanket sheets.
