Cardi B 2021 AMA’s

Last night was the 2021 American Music Awards (AMAs). While an award show that highlights music across the spectrum of genres, it was a special night, in that hip-hop was the forefront, in the sense of hosting. Cardi B landed herself the host of the 2021 AMA’s, and looked stunning doing so. As far as the awards go, hip-hop was nominated, but still only taking home the trophies in their dedicated categories.

Cardi wore several looks throughout the night. A black dress, giant veil and gold mask graced the red carpet Her looks throughout the show included ornate head pieces, and fitted gowns. Each look had something unique and exciting, along with everything that would come out of her mouth. Cardi is known for her comedic attitude in most situations. However, she knows business and how to get the job done. She had a job to do by hosting this award show, and ensured that all guests felt represented while she was on stage. She talked about JoJo Siwa, and suggested she was waiting for her to come to Cardi’s house to surprise Kulture. Cardi made a joke that JoJo’s booking fees are through the roof, and that she could out-do any rapper’s booking fees. JoJo seemed to love it, which is great considering some of her past interactions with males in hip-hop.

In terms of winners throughout the night, the AMA’s seem to be one of the shows whose voters mainly consist of those listening to FM radio and mainstream or pop hits. Drake and The Weeknd were nominated for Artist of the Year, but it was taken by none other than BTS. It seems like they are undefeated in these things, but it all comes down to who is voting.

When it comes to Hip-Hop specific categories, it was Drake and Megan Thee Stallion who went home with the most wins. Looking at the categories and the nominations, I think it’s important to see who made it there, and have they changed since last year? Drake did put out Certified Lover Boy, which is bound to put him in many award show nominees of the year. To me, Good News is late, already being a year old, and not really producing the sales Meg would have hoped. New albums drop in hip-hop every single week, they chose three albums from 2020, an R&B/Soul album, and a Drake album. It needs a lot of work.

I was happy to see Internet Money make their way to a nomination, but this is just the beginning. This is what hip-hop the youth are listening to today, so I guess we will continue to stay tuned to see how these shows progress over time. Below, is a full list of categories, nominees, and winners.
