Bobby Shmurda, Quavo

Bobby Shmurda, Quavo

Earlier this week, Bobby Shmurda arrived home from a six year stint behind bars. The celebrations and endorsements have not slowed down a bit, welcoming Bobby home and commending him what he sacrificed to help out his friends in a life changing sticky situation. We can only hope that new music is coming soon, but here is a quick recap on Bobby’s welcome home experience.

Quavo from the Migos had actually been the one to go pick up Bobby Shmurda from jail, in a private jet. While Bobby had his own rap group, G9, him and Quavo were always super close. On an Instagram post from Quavo’s page, you can see both Quavo and Bobby Shmurda hanging out in what appears to be a barber shop, and they are chatting and rhyming. Quavo captioned the post “tomorrow we back!” Then, the following day, posted another video of him and Bobby walking off of the private jet, together.

Another video going around shows Bobby with all cameras on him. He waves down Quavo to come be in the shots with him, who responds “do your thing, it’s your time.” Meanwhile, Bobby continues to call Quavo over and you can hear Bobby saying “he ain’t ever switch up, the whole six years.” A tweet from 2019 may sound familiar, where Quavo had shared he spoke to Bobby and shared the the was in good spirits. While adding “SHMIGO ALERT 2020!” one would assume a collaboration was on the way. Unfortunately we never got this, but now that Bobby is home, and the brotherly love seems to be there more than ever, we could be getting a G9 x Migos collab real soon.

Bobby spent a good amount of time with Quavo upon his release, but he was certainly not the only one. Of course, Rowdy Rebel was around to welcome him good friend home. Rowdy shared on his social media that Bobby was “a real one” and wrote in a caption of an old video clip from a concert, that “history would be made” once Bobby came home. Quavo had also gift Rowdy Rebel with a large stack of cash upon coming home. Rowdy had shared some clips of him freestyling in a street with a massive amount of people around him, so we can only imagine that him and Bobby are headed right to the studio once they finishing celebrating being home this week.

The Welcome Home Party is what really go me. Bobby had shared a photo to his Instagram page with his family, but 50 Cent shared a really incredible video to showcase all that went down. There were tons of people from the industry who showed up to welcome Bobby home. They put his name on cakes and fruits, blew up posters and balloons around the arena, labeling Bobby “King of New York (in Game of Thrones font), there were robot dancers, and of course, a Branson Cognac sponsor. One other interesting thing I noticed, was that no one was wearing a mask, besides Bobby Shmurda. I am not too sure if this is a legal thing, or if Bobby felt the need to be extra safe since he clearly had not quarantined since leaving jail, which is known to host a terrible amount of cases without any real opportunities presented to inmates to get tested. Though, just a side pick up on what seemed to be an extremely pleasant and grateful event. To this event recap post, 50 Cent shared “IT’s SHMURDA TIME BOBBY’s HOME, YOU KNOW THE WHOLE CITY READY TO TURN UP!”

The whole city was certainly there and ready to support Bobby. The New York Knicks even supported Bobby by putting up a massive billboard on the arena that stated “Welcome Home Bobby.” Six years is an incredibly long time, and there are some things that Bobby missed while he was gone. CJ, a new upcoming drill artist from NYC told Billboard that having Bobby come home was “legendary” for their city, and he hopes to have something in the works coming soon, hinting at the possibility of a collaboration. To that note, Bobby also missed the rise of Pop Smoke.

Bobby can be seen currently on his Instagram story, in a car with one of his friends, listening to Pop Smoke. He looks incredibly happy, one, to be live on his own page, but he also gets to listen to Pop Smoke for the first time. What Pop was able to do for the city, and for drill hip-hop, in such a short amount of time was legendary in itself. It would have been really cool to see what these guys could do together. Two very different sounds, but with the same respect and knowledge of where each other came from, it would have been something great. Not to say it still couldn’t happen if each team wanted that, but I think that is pushing too hard for something if does not already exist.

Now that Bobby is home, it is time to get back to business. He has mentioned that he no longer wants to reside in New York. It will always be where he came from, and he would go back for business, but it is truly time to get out of the city where so much trouble has came his way. I think this makes perfect sense, everyone moves from New York to either LA or Atlanta anyways, and he needs to keep his head on straight. This does not typically impact the sound of the artist per say, but Bobby has been gone for six years.

Hot Boy, which is undoubtedly Bobby’s biggest song, very well represents hip-hop in 2014. It is energetic, up-beat, loud, aggressive, you can dance to it, jump to it, sing at the top of your lungs to it. While Bobby was gone, we went through the whole “Soundcloud Era,” the hip-hop/punk-rock era, the sad boy music. This is not Bobby and his crew. While I do not necessarily see him going the route at all to take on someone like Uzi, or Yachty or anyone who did come up during the Soundcloud Era, will he old-school style stick? Hanging around someone like Quavo, there is certainly the potential that he does change his sound a bit. People like Migos, Young Thug and Lil Baby are all at the top of their game right now, but very much using adlibs and autotune. I could see Bobby taking on the role of major adlibs, but at the same time, would prefer to keep his old style back.

There is also the idea that the drill scene sparks with artists like CJ looking to continue Pop Smoke’s legacy. CJ himself even stated that he actually sang, but was inspired by Pop to try to take to the drill scene, and now wants to be the best. While listening to little snippets, like Rowdy Rebel shared, I think that they would go a little in between to all of these things. Like, not to steer too far off from their roots, but make the music a bit more “song” like and easy to catch on to.

I definitely want to hear the Bobby Shmurda and Migos track, just because of the friendship I have see since Bobby’s release. I definitely think a Lil Baby verse would be interesting. Perhaps a Pooh Shiesty verse may be the best fit overall to keep Bobby at his full-self potential. In a recent interview, Bobby’s mother says he is going right back to the studio, so I literally cannot wait to hear what is next.

All in all, we are all so excited that Bobby is home. However, Gucci Mane keeps his crown for being the real “First Day Out” when it comes to dropping music as soon as being released. Did Bobby forget how long I've been waiting!?
