Certified Lover Boy
10.27.20
Drake turned thirty-four over the weekend, and like anyone should for their Big Papi, David Ortiz year, he has a lot to celebrate. You may have heard about his outrageous menu at his birthday party, which consisted of kale salads and mac and cheese, but the music industry is willing to let that slide for kicking off 2021 with a new album, which Drake is calling, Certified Lover Boy. (if you caught the multiple Drake references I put in this opening paragraph, you’re a real one. Keep reading)
On his birthday, Drake shared a video on his Instagram page. It starts with a young boy looking into the sky, and almost as if aliens were about to land on Earth, the video cuts into a montage of Drake and different album cover artworks mashed up together. The ending shows the top of a building, almost as if he is Godzilla walking around the town and can look down upon the rooftops of buildings, and the top of the building writes “CLB,” standing for Certified Lover Boy. The video does go to black with a “January 2021” message.
Of course Drake fans are going absolutely insane for this new album. Genius is currently portraying their “unconfirmed track list” which consists of nine tracks. The tracks are recent singles, snippets and song titles heard across social media and recent PR. The features are short other than the Roddy Ricch and Lil Durk features, which we have already heard. I have to say, when this album does drop, I am sure it will be much more than what currently lies. However, the video has me wondering. What is with the mashup of all the other albums? Is this just a Drake’s greatest hits?
Would he get everyone excited for a greatest hits album? Probably not. Hopefully not. Maybe the montage was just to show that this new album, will bring the biggest and the best R&B/Pop/Hip-Hop love song Drake we know to date. If you just cannot wait til January, Drake has a surprise for you, too.
Drake and OVO have been rocking with Nike and Jordan for many years now. The number one sneaker brand in the world, teamed up with Drake for his own Certified Lover Boy merchandise collection, available now for any Drake fan to cop. This has got to mean there is something special about this project, and the clothing line is pretty dope, itself.
The collection is available now on Drake’s website. There is a hoodie with the CLB logo largely imprinted on the front, which comes in a gray, white and back. Then, there are numerous t-shirts in those colors-ways, playing on big logos, small logos, and logos on the back. I love the crew socks with the heart around the Nike swoosh, and the classic Drake baseball cap with a red lipstick mark on the brim. One t-shirt, and the collection staple are considered Friends and Family units, so you will be lucky if you can grab them. The staple, is this Nike bomber jacket, instead of the classic diamond stitching, are hearts stitched in all over the bomber. The jacket comes in a blush pink, as well as a dark gray. Drake first wore the piece in his “Laugh Now Cry Later” music video, which he and Lil Durk released in August as well. Now, Drake’s Friends and Family members can purchase their own. I will definitely be looking into how I can pick up this one.
The units are reasonably priced for a collab between two greats, so I would definitely go check out the site and get yours before they are gone. If that does not hold you over til January, Drake also cerated this website Drake Related, which looks like you are in his studio. You can hop around and click on different objects you find in his studio. There are different areas of shopping, music from other OVO artists, learning more about the group, and so much more.
