Kendrick’s Statement

6.28.22

While releasing his fifth album, Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers, Kendrick Lamar made some huge statements throughout the lyricism in his project, and reached number one on several Top Album Charts around the world. Still, he finds himself with much more to say, and certainly made several more statements during his performance at the Glastonbury Festival in the United Kingdom, over the weekend.

Jay-Z headlined the festival back in 2008, and this year Kendrick was the headliner for hip-hop. Billie Eilish and Paul McCartney headlined the other two days of the festival. So, this was clearly a very global event with quite the mix of music genre tastes. Whether or not you were a fan walking in, you would not forget this Kendrick performance.

Coming off his fifth studio album, there has been nothing but talk about what the project entailed. Genius to many, too much to handle for some. But this performance would take it to the next level.

Kendrick wore a white button up top and and a crown built for a God. As his performances went on throughout the night, he played a number of your favorite hits, new and old. From Be Humble, to N95. As he began to perform Savior, (fake) blood began pouring from his shirt, and dripping down his face. He ended his performance with a multitude of dancers standing behind him, as he chanted over and over:

They judge you, they judge Christ. God’s speed for women’s rights.

Even in the United Kingdom, this message hit home for everyone listening to the decisions that were made this past weekend by the United States Government. We heard the message loud and clear Kendrick, and we’ll probably start buying Tiffany & Co. again, too.

Kendrick’s crown was deigned by Tiffany & Co. and was made with fifty thorns and over 8,000 pavé diamonds. The representation on Instagram also shared the following details of the crown:

Handcrafted by four artisans over the span of 10 months, and a total of 1,300 hours setting the thousands of diamonds, Tiffany’s expert craftspeople brought the @kendricklamar crown to life from 16 individual pieces that were assembled to form the final design.

Tiffay & Co could not have predicted this moment since they have been working on it for ten months, but a major statement was made with this performance.
