Spotemgottem Beatbox

The Beatbox song has completely taken over the internet. A situation where, no one really knows the original artist, but the beat is so good, it then gets blown up by several other artists. Spotemgottem is an eighteen year old rapper from Florida, who went viral last summer with his hit single Beatbox. Almost a year later, the song is still blowing up with remixes and freestyles.

Spotemgottem is young, but talks about some dark things in his rhymes. However, the lyrical content was not one to overcome the funky beat, to get people dancing, even on TikTok. From artists like Swae Lee, Saweetie, Safaree and even people like Kevin Hart, the hit was an instant TikTok sensation. People would do the June Bug challenge to the song where you dance in random places, like a gas station, the middle of the street, Church, jail, etc. People got pretty crazy with it. I cannot remember the last time that a song went viral in terms of remixes, and boy this is fun. The question, however, is who did it best?

Pooh Shiesty is the first artist to remix the track, back in December of 2020. This essentially because the radio hit remix, and dubbed itself the official title Beatbox 2. Pooh Shiesty is one of Gucci Mane’s new 1017 artists, and has been blowing up lately with his unique sound in a number of features, including his viral hit Back In Blood, featuring Lil Durk. It’s kind of funny, when I first heard this song, I thought Spotemgottem was Ola Runt, who was a former new 1017 member. He has a similar sound to Spotem, and I actually think that would have been a great duo, or trio for this collaboration. Pooh Shiesty obviously set the bar high, making this a radio hit and viral sensation, but I do feel like his beats are typically a bit more uptempo. I think this was slightly off to what he has been getting radio play for. But, doesn’t mean he this is not where he started.

Calboy was actually the next up to remix the track, in early January. Calboy does not just rap over an uptempo beat about dark things, but he sings about dark things over uptempo beat. I feel like with this, Calboy was trying to remind people what he could do. There really is not anything pretty about the lyrics behind this freestyle, but it sure does sound pretty. Calboy sang the chorus, switching up minor lyrics to his firearm of choice. It was a different approach to the aggressive hit, and sounded nice. As each artist in this group did, he created a visual for the piece, which included his friend doing the June Bug behind a shower curtain, as Calboy did himself, wearing a hoodie whose hood zipped up all the way, enclosing the hood to reveal a crystal skeleton face. I am not giving this the top spot, but by no means should sleep on Calboy’s version.

Then, of course, DaBaby shares his Beatbox Freestyle in mid-February. This is most likely the crowds favorite, most recognizable remix. DaBaby basically pushed Pooh Shiesty to the side with this one, taking over radio plays and the new title Beatbox 3. While this beat comes from a Florida boy, it is right up DaBaby’s North Carolina alley. He brings the energy and the aggression to the track, which maybe went a little too far. Many were upset with DaBaby for calling JoJo Siwa a b*** in the track, however, as always, he was able to talk his way out of the controversy. DaBaby claimed this was word play that went over peoples heads, and stated that him and his daughter both love JoJo Siwa.

Finally for the guys, we have Bizzy Banks, a twenty-one year old rapper from East New York. While Bizzy is one of the less popular at the moment, it seems like New York is flooding with new talent where the next big thing could come at any moment. Bizzy Banks tapes his Beatbox Freestyle in a local grocery store, as he recites his bars to the surveillance cameras and eats a bag of chips, at the same damn time. Talent. Out of everyone, I do think that Bizzy comes with the most aggressive flow of all the freestylers. I think that gives this one more of an acquired taste, however, I do see him hooking up with Spotgottem and/Pooh Shiesty once again. I think it was smart for him to hop on this trend, and likely get some additional views when people are searching for all the remixes available, and find their favorite one. While the lyrics were on par with violence, he put some fashion in here too. I love a word play about different name brands. (Off-White, and Rhude are both streetwear brands).

Mulatto is the first to kick it off for the ladies. Quite honestly, she is my favorite of the females at this moment. She went from being a XXL Freshman, dropping her album, with iconic features left and right. Mulatto is truly on the rise to stardom and I do not think she is coming down. I was absolutely obsessed when she dropped her freestyle, and frankly I laughed at several punchlines. I love that she was able to make it a bit more fun and light-hearted. Though, still demanding her crown for dominating the freestyles that have taken place thus far. It should be a Beatbox 4, but that’s none of business.

If you guys do not know about Shenseea, you need to get familiar, and do not forget who put you one. Shenseea is a twenty-four year old hip-hop artist from Jamaica, whom recently got a lot of pick up for her freestyle on a Reggae radio station. Now, she has shared her version of the Beatbox Challenge, and she is nothing to mess with. I heard her preview this on her page a few weeks back, and the official video dropped this weekend. Of course, her sound is different and exciting. On top of that, her lyrics sting and her flow does not miss a beat, no matter how much she decides to speed up, or slow down on the beat. Not to endorse violence in any way, but since this TikTok song about violence went viral, one of Shenseea’s most swift bars includes referencing her firearm as 21 Savage.

Finally, Dreezy AKA Big Dreez shared her version of the Beatbox Freetsyle over the weekend as well. Dreezy is calling it the Beatbox Bday Freestyle, as she celebrated her twenty-seventh birthday on Sunday. Dreezy is basically having the time of her life in the video, and I am here for it. She instantly starts namedropping other artists to fit into her rhyme scheme. From each and every Migos, to Christina Milan, Giveon, Tiger Woods and more. She makes nods to Pop Culture fads like the Silhouette Challenge and TikTok. I always find it clever when artists are able to tie in cultural moments to their rhymes for us to catch on to. On top of all that, she is literally eating chicken wings throughout the whole video. Dreezy is highly, highly underrated in the female hip-hop artist category. She can sing, be cute, be crazy, or go in on her bars and word play, which she did here without a doubt.

If I am being honest, I might have to give the overall crown to Dreezy. Big fan of Mulatto’s as well, but I think Dreezy really killed it with this one. Either way, the ladies are a strong, strong favorite. And in women’s month, who would have thought!?

I feel like this is far from over, with several of these dropping just this month. I would love to take this beat to the North East, and the East. Maybe the Only The Family crew could put something together. I would like to see Lil Durk, G Herbo, and 42 Dugg try this beat out for size.
