Will This Debut be an Exit?

Coi Leray

The hip-hop industry, and music industry in general is certainly not an easy one to navigate. Especially, that is, when an artist is trying something new that some may be slow to catch on to. Artists have continued to open up about their feelings with life, the industry, and their labels. For this trending artist getting ready to drop her debut album, fans are questioning if it will also be her last.

Coi Leray has come off a year with as many highs as lows. She was a XXL Freshman, went on tours, performed at festivals, and had multiple chart reaching singles. At the same time, there was public family drama, and extremely harsh critiques reacting to crowds during performances. Coi had always kept her head up and kept it moving, but how long can one really take it.

One thing we learned from the XXL Freshman class last year, was that many of the artists came from the social media space. Coi is infamous for her TikToks. DDG was a YouTuber before his hip-hop career. Plenty others got their big breaks by being trending topics on social media. Hip-hop is changing with the way that people consume content, which has lead Coi Leray down a path that is she has had to navigate on her own.

There has been many mentions about a debut album coming from Coi Leray. Due to a few hints on Twitter, I believe we can expect this album to be dropping at some point in March. Other tweets suggest there is a snippet floating around of an A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie feature. Coi also shared a “Notes” memo that suggested another feature with Lil Tecca. She captioned the post “3xx22,” leading us to believe that this album is dropping next month.

This would have to be exciting news for Coi Leray, however, things seem to be a bit off lately. Coi had shared a concerning post to fans that read:

"To all my trendsetters, I’m sorry I let you down. I don’t have it in me to keep pushing. I feel like I’m brain dead. I pray that everyone continues to keep setting trends and striving. Don’t know when I’ll be back but I don’t even want to think about it. I love you for life. -coi"

The Tweet appears to be removed, but she followed this up with a second Tweet that simply read “brain dead,” which does remain. At first, I thought she had cancelled a tour stop, but then realized it is about much more than that.

It seems like the album is ready to drop, but could her debut album be her last? Perhaps she was putting the final touches on it, but had some disagreements with the label on clearing? Or is the young artist simply going through something on Valentine’s after no sign of previously invested boyfriend, Pressa?

Coi Leray did say she had a great time at Fashion Week, and has always been one to rise above any negativity. Hopefully she pulls through, as I am definitely excited to hear the album.
