Cordae

A recent clip from Cordae in a sneaker stock room hit the internet suggesting that he had a lot of new music on the way. In the clip, the interviewer asks Cordae to gives us some details about “the project he is working on.” To that Cordae responding that he is almost done working on his album, but would drop a “not too serious” four pack before the album comes out, to hold over fans. Cordae said he’s recorded a song everyday since being in quarantine, and based on his own posts yesterday, we could get all of this much sooner than expected.

It has been over a year since the quarantine began. Cordae shared during the interview that it has helped him consistently get better over this time, and has yet to go a day without recording. Cordae’s debut studio album, The Lost Boy, was released in July of 2019 and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rap Album. In the US, the song peaked at 13 on Billboard Top 200, and peaked at number 8 on Billboard Top Hip-Hop/R&B Albums. Hearing that Cordae has been putting in the work and claims he has seen growth in his own work over the past year and change is tremendous, for a young talent that was already so ahead of his times.

Now that this video of the new music has gone viral, Cordae decides to share a clip in the studio on his Instagram page. A track is playing, Cordae is vibing to it, and he captions the video “Sums different, new music next week.” Cordae shared the post to his stories and quoted “Just until…” So, this most likely means that Cordae will be dropping his four pack EP next Friday, to hold us over until he is done with the album. You never know when it comes to artists and their work, but with his certainty that the album is album done, I think we definitely get that by the summer, so that Cordae will have dropped his sophomore album exactly two years after the debut.

Now, to break down the snippet that was shared, Cordae labeled it “sumn different” and that it was for sure. Cordae has a unique sound, that is reminiscent of old school hip-hop. He has a flow that pairs nicely with Anderson. Paak, that has received praise from legends like Eminem, Dr. Dre and Royce Da 5’9. Now he definitely does not sound different in the sense that he lost himself to sound like the new generation of hip-hop, quite the opposite actually. Cordae says he is getting better, and I think he is learning the technical aspect to music, changing your voice to different beats and tempos, as well as how everything sounds polished up in the studio.

While listening to the snippet, I feel like I hear a mixture of Chance the Rapper, Mac Miller and something else that I have heard before. But it so clearly him at the same time. It is a slow, feel good beat, and I think could be a huge hit for the “chill tunes” playlist. I hear a bit of the Bay Area tune in here as well. I don’t know if I just cannot put my finger on it, but I really feel like he pulled some of his favorite things from different areas of music, and mashed it all up into one masterpiece. I am honestly really enjoying it, and excited to hear what else he has for us on these upcoming projects.
