Desiigner’s Comeback

Desiigner

Desiigner had the hottest hit record of 2015, Panda, which he even got the legend of Kanye West to participate on the remix. At the time, Desiigner was signed to Kanye at G.O.O.D Music, but we heard very little from him since. Since 2019, Desiigner has been released from G.O.O.D Music, and has recently been putting in work for what he hopes is the ultimate comeback.

This timing feels very calculated, as we are coming off of Kanye West’s Drink Champs interview, where he ruffled a lot of feathers. He said that signing Big Sean was the worst thing that he’s ever done in his career, and he also said he took Soulja Boy off of his album, because the verse was trash. Both parties had a lot to say, but this is far from the first time we have heard about struggles within the label. In terms of Desiigner’s relationship with the label, he has previously explained that there was a lot holding back music that he had created, opinions he did not care for, and not enough opportunity to speak to people on the label he thought would help his success. He expressed being compared to Future too regularly, and not seeing eye to eye on some beliefs and ways of the label.

While they may not have topped charts the way Panda did in 2015, Desiigner has released a slew of singles this year, on his own terms, including a three track project, 3 The Hard Way. His latest is a single Get Back, with a music video and lyrics to remind you just who he is.

The opening visual of the music video pans through Desiigner’s icey jewelry, then to a gigantic plaque sharing that Panda sold over 10 Million units. A humble brag, that only gets more apparent throughout the lyrics of the song, claiming he is still very rich, and still running with his friends “in the streets.” Desiigner is definitely attempting to facilitate his status in the industry, proving he has what it takes to be an influential artist, without any help of his old label.

The comparison to Future is interesting, but I think a bit off. Desiigner in Panda and his few other singles from 2015-2016 was a brand new sound. You could barely understand what he was saying, but you’d read the lyrics, pick it up, and vibe with it. It was a fun sound, which had people singing, dancing, and partying all night long. This new sound from Desiigner is a bit different. He takes his rap skills, and kind of raps them with a melody and a bit of autotune. Some will definitely compare this to what Future is doing, but you already know that Desiigner’s energy is skyrocketing over the energy of Future, twenty-four-seven, seven days a week.

This music video premiered on YouTube on November 5th, and currently just has over 40,000 views. I am not sure if it is enough to catch the attention of hip-hop right now, with so much madness going on. However, I think it will be interesting to see if Desiigner can pull together another viral hit that brings him back into the fold. It seems like a TikTok song from Desiigner could be the way to go to redeem relevance, and he says he is in the studio daily. Time will tell, if the release from G.O.O.D Music the label is the fall or the rise of Desiigner as a hip-hop artist.
