Doja Cat Featuring Nicki Minaj ‘Say So’ Released 5.1.20

Doja Cat released a remix to her original song, ‘Say So,’ which features Nicki Minaj, less than two weeks ago. Today, the female duo hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 hits chart. This marks the first number one Billboard Hot 100 hit for Doja Cat, as well as Nicki. If you thought that Nicki Minaj definitely hit number one before, this is her first number one for Billboard. It was, however, her 109th entry on the charts, which is a record of entries and nothing to shy away from. Though, interesting it took a feature on a Doja Cat song to get her here.

Doja Cat has been a firecracker in the media recently. Some may know her for being a little crazy on the internet, but she is very musically talented. Though she did just miss out of the female powerhouse year of the 2019 XXL Freshman Class, she has been recognized by many, from her 2019 BET Awards performances, to being a team captain and performer on MTV’s Wild ‘N Out, to having her original version of ‘Say So’ go viral as a Tik Tok Hashtag Challenge. I always think back to when Cardi B was recording ‘Rhythm and Flow,’ she said something along the lines of “you need to be a good performer and singer, but you need to have a better personality. The people want entertainment, at all times.” After Nicki Minaj came Cardi B, and I believe this number one hit may have just opened the doors for Doja Cat to finally break through.

The ‘Say So’ track has a bit of different vibe than we are used to from Doja, or any hip-hop artist. She sings on the chorus, a very soft yet high-pitched tone. We get total disco vibes from the seventies listening to this song, and the original is accompanied by a video that confirms that is exactly what Doja was going for. In a TRL appearance since the release of her song, Doja said “I did not realize people loved disco so much, but okay. This is great.” So, it is really nice to see how well the song was doing for her, even prior to the remix with Nicki Minaj. She went ahead and rapped on her verses and definitely kept the content interesting. However, by doing something this different, you’re adding a new layer of fans to gravitate to your song, then the rest of your catalog. By getting Nicki Minaj on a song, you’re gaining an entire cult on your side. If Nicki likes you, ‘The Barbz’ worldwide like you, too. Not to mention, Doja Cat did post that she would flash the world on Instagram Live if she had gone number one. Did the world really stream this much just to see? Well, she got you all good.

While Doja Cat and Nicki Minaj reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart this week, Megan Thee Stallion and Beyonce were right behind them at number two. Woman in hip-hop are currently taken over, and these are all super successful names. With this, I hope we hear a lot more from Doja Cat, music, that is.
