Dr. Dre

Last year was a really tough year for most people, and 2021 was definitely not off to the best of starts. However, Dr. Dre is looking to make a major comeback, after all of the setbacks he has encountered over the past several months. From writing, recording and producing, Dr. Dre is ready to show us that he has still got it, and there is truly nothing that can break him down.

About seven months ago, news spread about a pretty nasty divorce between Dr. Dre and his ex-wife. The two had been married since 1996 and have two children together. Dre’s wife made some horrible accusations about their relationship, and made sure to fight for every penny she could. As if hurting’s one’s reputation and taking all of their money is not horrifying enough, Dr. Dre faced some serious trauma last month in January, suffering a brain aneurysm. Dre being hospitalized became public knowledge, and his mansion was targeted for burglary while he was away at the hospital. After over a week in intensive treatment, Dr. Dre returned home.

Dr. Dre himself on social media seems to only share things that are super important. When admitted to the hospital, he posted to thank the care workers, and ensure everyone that he was doing well and would be home soon. Yesterday, he shared a post to congratulate Jay-Z on some great business adventures and decisions he has made. However, Dr. Dre’s friends have been giving us just the insights that we need in order to really prepare for what is the comeback of Dr. Dre.

First, HipHopDX did an interview with Too $hort and E-40 that just dropped yesterday, regarding their “California-Centered Super Group” project they are working on. Shortly after Too $hort and E-40 did their Verzuz battle, they announced that they would be creating a California Super Group, inclusive of themselves, Ice Cube and Snoop Dogg, in which there was a project in the works coming up. With this being such an iconic bunch from the West Coast, HipHopDX was quick to ask if Dr. Dre would be involved in the project. Too $hort and E-40 both jumped in with tact stating that Dr. Dre was on the project, already recorded his part and was certified to definitely be involved on the project. They mentioned Dr. Dre will be the one feature outside of the previously mentioned talents that would be on the project.

Too $hort and E-40 seemed to be ecstatic to have Dr. Dre be a part of the project, and for the project overall. They mentioned that they are all alphas, but they are all friends and would be accepting to all feedback when recording. Though, they told the story that after one song, they told Ice Cube he went “too hard.” Ice Cube responded hours later saying he would not change a thing, and everyone just agreed to let him do him. So, it appears that everyone will be going all out on this project, and it seems like a good portion of it has got to be completed already, as well. This could have been recorded prior to Dre’s horrific accident, or it could have been after, since we do know Dr. Dre has been in the studio. Either way, it is something overall that I cannot wait to release.

So, the other thing that has people talking this week is an Instagram Live from DJ Silk, one of Dr. Dre’s longtime friends and partners. DJ Silk played a decent length snippet of an apparent upcoming track from Dr. Dre. The track features KXNG Crooked, and some insights into what he has been going through over the past few months, with his divorce case, and his hospitalization case.

In the track, Dr. Dre rhymes:

"Trying to kill me with them lies and that perjury / I see you trying to f** me while I'm in surgery / In ICU, death bed, on some money s** / Greedy b***, take a pick / Girl you know how money get."

So, Dr. Dre is clearly not holding back here, and neither is KXNG Crooked who is heard laying a crazy verse on the track, as well. From Dr. Dre, I am hearing a mix of Dre from the Compton album, with a bit of older school flows as well. I love having Crook on the track as soon as Dre comes back to the studio. Eminem has continued to praise Crook as an artist, he really shined with the verse heard in this snippet, in my opinion. The beat and part of the chorus also takes a very present inspiration from Snoop Dogg and R. Kelly’s That’s That S*** from 2013.

The last time Dr. Dre released an album was the Compton album in 2015. There were some Tweets going around last November that stated Dre had completed an album that was ready to be released. Of course, many things held that back from officially releasing, but the time could be near. It truthfully pains me that Dre is still being put through all of this craziness. However, it seems like he is making the best he can, out of a horrible situation. Music is certainly the outlet to do all of this, and I cannot wait to hear the finals of everything that he been working on. Dare I say, may be the time, if ever, for Detox?
