Gucci Mane & ICE: Fake Friends

It is a brand new year, and every year, people talk about what they’re leaving behind. Bad habits, being lazy, and usually, some fake friends and bad relationships. Gucci Mane is starting off the new year strong with some words for his son, about navigating through those fake friends. With a new single and accompanying music video, we are destined for a strong year from Guwop.

Over the past two years, Gucci Mane has been building up his New 1017 roster, looking for the hottest up-and-coming artists around. The team is stacked pretty heavily right now, from Foogiano, Pooh Shiesty, Enchanting, Big Walk Dog, Big Scarr and more. Multiple group projects and group singles have been released, and Gucci has always been known to be super consistent. On top of rebuilding his empire, he had his first son, Ice Davis. We all know Gucci wrapped up 2021 and said 2022, is on me, and dropped his brand new single.

Fake Friends premiered on YouTube on Monday January 3rd, and in twenty-four hours have over 300,000 views, with little promotion other than an Instagram post from Guwop. In the music video, Gucci is holding his son Ice, who just turned one-year-old on December 23rd. Ice is wearing a matching Gucci set (top and shorts), with Gucci socks and shoes, along with a 1017 chain, a few bracelets, and an icy watch. Gucci is rocking a yellow Prada vest, and plenty of ice, including the Bugatti Chiron watch he was gifted from his wife Keyshia for Christmas.

On top of the father-son-duo already crushing everyone’s video looks, they came correct with the video car, as well. While the video is shot in-studio, Gucci sits inside of an orange Rolls Royce, orange interior and leather seats, with “ICE” stitched into each headrest, and a notation in the doorway that reads “Hand Built in Goodwood, England for ICE.” Baby Ice has fifteen more years before he can drive, but his first ride is sure to top the greatest car more of us will ever own.

The final prop for the video that truly shows how much of a genius artist Gucci Mane is, is seeing him hold this book throughout the video. It is a children’s book, and the title is “Bedtime for Ice.” Not just a book written for his son, but the fact that this song is basically a tale Gucci is telling to his son. The tale is about Gucci’s life, making it out of the streets, becoming successful, and who he had to loose on the way because they were not real friends.

When seeing the new track and song title, I was thinking I may be getting some specifics as to who Gucci is referring to as fake friends. However, I do not think he was speaking at anyone directly, I think he used this as pure reason to teach his son some things, lightly, but truthfully.

Gucci used story telling, he rhymed, he switched up the flow several times. It reminded me of old Gucci, the way the track was delivered. His punchlines were endless and had me rewinding several times. Gucci started off 2022, and the bar is high for the rest of the year.

Here are some of my favorite bars from the track.

And there’s no friend indeed like a friend in need
But there’s one thing you gotta watch and that’s a friend in greed

The moneys get on and forget who came up with ’em in the trenches
But just like an asshole, I guess we all get an opinion

Don’t never tell your left hand what your right got planned

To keep some people out my business, had to burn a couple bridges
‘Cause gettin’ played for ’em fools went out of style with true religion
