2 Chainz ‘Grey Area’ Dropping 1/28/21 By Motion Family

Today at noon, 2 Chainz will drop the music video for Grey Area, one of his hit singles from his latest album, So Help Me God. After dropping an image, then a snippet of the video, it is clear this video is going to be too good not to talk about. It is trippy, it is shocking, it is funny, and pretty freaking weird. Fans of 2 Chainz and his craft, would likely call this, absolutely genius.

The song Grey Area, is funnily enough one of 2 Chainz biggest hits off the album, but also the most explicit. I do not think there is any real meaning to the song, other than 2 Chainz declaring that he is just that guy. What he is referring to as the Grey Area, is that point in his life when some people may think he’s too old, but some may think he is too young. He is really rocking in that grey area where he could go with either crowd, of fellow friends, or women, as he states in the track.

2 Chainz shared that he has team up with Motion Family to create this music video. Motion Family is a video and photography team that has worked with tons of hip-hop artists on their videos and photography, from NLE Choppa, to Gucci Mane, Jeezy, DaBaby, Lil Baby, Yo Gotti, Boosie, and many many more.

The Motion Family team and 2 Chainz have teamed up previously to create a music video for Watch Out, which released in January of 2016. Even back then, the music video was quite goofy and a bit trippy. They made 2 Chainz look like he had a gigantic bobbly head, on a smaller body. Throughout the video, they place this giant 2 Chainz head on different body types. From babies, to short chunky kids, to a fat grown many, skinny guys beating each other up in jail, the pizza man, the list really goes on and on. The video was hysterical, so of course, five years later, they have to pick it up a notch.

Already from the snippet, we can tell that they use a similar technique, where 2 Chainz head is not portioned correctly onto his body. In fact, 2 Chainz and Trappy (his beautiful dog) head swap! 2 Chainz head is on the body of a dog, while 2 Chainz body holds the head of the puppy, as he goes off to dance and do his thing as if everything is completely normal.

The background appears to be in a living room, where the lights change colors, and the couches, walls and decor are all extorted, moving and stretched out to give a super trippy vibe. There is also a seen where a girl is carrying the dog, playing with him like a newly adopted pup, however it is 2 Chainz head on the dog rapping at us, and it all just seems so super outlandish.

In the chorus, 2 Chainz does say “I’m a beast I’m a dog, y’all don’t really f** get it.” He also makes a couple references to drugs or smoking, while reinstating that he is conquering the grey area age in his life. This could be where the ideas came from to make a trippy video, with Trappy, that actually depicts 2 Chainz as a dog. Or maybe they are just crazy, either way, I will take it.

Artists such as Snoop Dogg, Juelz Santana, Quavo, DaniLeigh, Phor and others have already praised 2 Chainz on the fire visuals. Charlamagne himself said “this is f*** genius” and also added some laughing emojis.

The state that we are currently living in, makes it a lot harder to artists to safely create music videos, so it is super exciting to have this one hit our computer or TV screens, not only for the visuals, but the laughter and pure entertainment. Of course, being that we are truly living in a digital first world, it is incredible to see the extent of editing and producing that the team was able to accomplish, to literally not just take a photo and swap heads, to do it for the entirety of this music video.

I wonder if Trappy enjoyed being 6”5 for the day.
