We Are Young Money 2009

It has been almost a year since the pandemic has begun, and everyone has been through a lot since then. One person in particular that has been put through much more than the already unprecedented times, is Lil Wayne. Through his relationship, his family, his political views, his label and legal battles, no doubt Lil Wayne has had one crazy year. However, he seems to be in good spirits, and is determined to give us something to get our spirits up as well. Some good old Young Money.

Lil Wayne announced there will be a Young Money compilation album on a Fox Sports Radio podcast show, Up On Game. It is no surprise that Lil Wayne would be on a Fox Sports Radio podcast, because of not only his connection through sports and music, but Wayne is a huge sports fan and even has his own athlete sponsorship brand, similar to Roc Nation Sports. Young Money APAA hosts a large number of athletes from football, basketball, softball baseball and more. Just a few notable athletes under Lil Wayne’s team include Devin and Jason McCourty, Jakobi Meyers, Jalen Hurts, Keke Coutee, Matt Breida, Tyler Boyd and many, many more.

On top of building an entire roster of athletes under Young Money, he has incorporated his love for sports within his music, as well. Just this past football season, Wayne wrote a whole song for his hometown team, the Green Bay Packers, rooting them on to win the Super Bowl. Though taken down by Tom Brady loosing their chance at the trophy, Lil Wayne’s Black and Yellow Remix, Green and Yellow, will live on for seasons and seasons to come.

When first entering the show, Lil Wayne explained how he became such a huge Green Bay Packers fan, when being from New Orleans. He explained that his father once went to the Super Bowl that Green Bay had won, and in the moment of appreciating the experience, he took home all of the memorabilia. Wayne says he started using all of the memorabilia, from cups, towels and hats, daily, and being a loyal guy, decided to ride out with the Packers from then, on.

The rest of the conversation continued to be filled with new stories about Lil Wayne we’d never heard before. They discussed the APAA league and his personal relationships with all of his athletes. He even discussed how he got onto the Masked Singer television show, explaining he was actually trying to get Nicki Minaj on the show, but ended up getting casted himself. Of course, we want to hear about the new music.

Lil Wayne said he has some new artists, and is putting together a Young Money compilation album. The album will bring all the artists together, and hopefully give they a jumpstart to releasing their own solo projects.

For the Super Bowl, in addition to Lil Wayne’s Green and Yellow song, he released a song Super Bowl with Young Money members Gudda Gudda, Hoodybaby and Jay Jones. This is the most recent from the collective, but the last true compilation album was Rise of an Empire in 2014.

Lil Wayne really has the world on his shoulders with this one. These past projects with Nicki Minaj, Drake, Birdman, and all the friends that came in and out, they were our childhoods. They were what defined hip-hop. Basically, they were everything. There is no denying that Lil Wayne knows how to pick talent, but to live up to this, he is going to need some real heavy hitters.

Either way it goes, I will certainly be tuning in to check out the New Young Money. You can find the whole interview on iHeart Radio.
