NBA Draft 2020 11.18.20

The NBA Draft of 2020 took place last night, and what a night for sports, and for fashion. Back in 2016, I graduated from college with a fashion design degree, where my senior collection was completely inspired by Draft Day looks. Yes, I did have a model wearing a suit with suit shorts. The Draft this year was much later in the year than usual, so it may have been a bit too cold for that. However, there is still plenty, to talk about.

Like many other events this year, the NBA Draft was recording virtually, from the homes of each individual draft pick. That did make this year a bit interesting when it came to the looks that everyone would be wearing. Many draftees still wore their suits and dressed to the nines. While others wore graphic tees and bomber jackets, representing their sponsors. There were plenty of sneakers, and still plenty of dress suits. The NBA gave each draftee a locker gift set, with a baseball cap from each and every team, so that when drafted, they would be able to put on their new teams hat, just like every year prior.

Let us take a look at some of the best looks, and give them their rankings from one to ten.

Tyrese Haliburton, the number 12 draft pick, drafted by the Sacramento Kings. This is what I want to see when I turn on Draft Day. Unexpected colors, crazy patterns, and the classic message on the inside of the jacket. This baby blue suit with floral print is something I have never seen before, and is quite flattering. The dark blue lapel matches his blue suede loafers, and the maroon from the flowers is brought together with the jacket liner, and bow tie. The 920 on his chain is representation of his hometown in Wisconsin, which is also found on the inside of his jacket, with a message that says “920 to the League.” The other side of the jacket, “Black Live Matter.” Both such important messages during this time. Being thankful for your own success, while using your platform to stick up for those whom are struggling. The suit is flashy, and beautiful in every way.

James Wiseman, the second overall draft pick, who is on his way to Golden State. Wiseman kept it super cool and casual, yet clean different. Personally, I love a suit with a graphic tee. It has become a super popular trend in female fashion as well, wearing an oversized blazer with a graphic and sneakers. Here we have a fitted, tailored suit, navy with a green plaid pattern. The graphic tee underneath is from the Foot Locker x Chicago Don C x Week of Greatness collection, which was actually seen a couple of draftees this year. Causal vibes, but when fitted so perfectly, it looks fancy. Wiseman pairs these with some ankle high Nike socks and, of course, the Jordan 11 Retro Concords. Not so sure if the graphic tees would have went over well if we were not working from home this year, but I think the look all together is super nice.

Aaron Nesmith gets drafted by the Boston Celtics, at the overall pick number 14. Thank goodness, they just passed 13 because Aaron was feeling lucky with this one. The green plaid matching suit screams I hope I get picked by the Celtics, and that is just what he got. I think the cream undershirt pairs well with the suit’s contrasting colors. I do think the brown tie is throwing me off. Mainly, the strange pattern that does not due the suit’s pattern much justice. I want to love it so much, especially since green is my favorite color, and I am from Boston, however I just cannot help but think this is a grandpa suit. He looks great, just a bit out of his time.

The Detroit Pistons selected Killian Hayes as the seventh overall draft pick, and they sure did get a great one. It seems like many were not anticipating Hayes to show out like this on Draft Day, and now I am excited to see his tunnel fits on game days of the future. Hayes went with a black turtleneck top, fitted black blazer, a cropped black pant and Louis Vuitton belt, and yes, he did it, the Off-White 4s. Not only is this the most flattering, best dressed look of the night, but this photo and scenery is absolutely insane. It will probably be hung in his family’s house for years to come.

Cole Anthony was selected 15th overall in the NBA Draft, by the Orlando Magic. Cole was another whom was gifted a graphic tee from Foot Locker’s Week of Greatness program, which he was also seen in wearing earlier in the night. These photos, take a turn for the glow up, as he rocks a nice tailor pant and lots, with a gorgeous black and gold patterned jacket. It looks like it could be a Dolce & Gabbana jacket, by the D&G and crown logos embroidered on the jacket. The closure details are more than just buttons, they are so elegant and scream royalty. Cole should not feel any other way after pulling officially being called to the NBA, and being able to give us two different fits at opposite ends of the spectrum.

Lamelo Ball, probably the most widely known member of the 2020 NBA Draft Class, was selected third overall by the Charlotte Hornets. Of course, Melo had to come with his bling on one thousand. He wore a tailored black suit, with a surprise on the back. His “Melo 1” logo embroidered in gold, which went quite nicely with the chain around his neck. Melo rocked some gold loafers which appeared to have sparkles, and spikes. Finally, he even wore some shades that had bling. I do not hate the glasses because he is inside, but I just think they are too big for him. I absolutely love this look besides the glasses, but of course Melo does not care as long as he can flex. Hopefully Lavar was happy with number three, Melo seemed to be pleased, just fine.

Anthony Edwards, your 2020 NBA Draft Number One Pick Overall. Edwards accepts his Minnesota Timberwolves hat from the safety of his home, where he will wear ripped jeans and a t-shirt if he wants to. He is rocking a Foot Locker Week of Greatness t-shirt, a bomber jacket and jeans, for an overall black on black look. I do not hate this look, at all. Though, even on an off day it feels like it could have been done a bit better. Edwards pulls this off like the Quarterback in high school, who knows he is going to win but is pretending like it is no big deal. Similar to his hooping, we will see if the game day fits improve with practice.
