A Letter From Kap

9.26.23

Colin Kaepernick, J Cole

Colin Kaepernick has been unfortunately without a job in the NFL for the past six years after fighting for social injustice on the football field. After many years of fight, it became hopeful that Kap would have had another opportunity to showcase himself on the field. A recent letter highlights Kaepernick’s formal ask to be given the opportunity to return to the NFL, to New York City.

Football fans are likely aware that Week One, the New York Jets lost their new and beloved quarterback, Aaron Rogers, whom should be out for the season. There were actually fake memes going around saying that the Jets were signing Colin Kaepernick for a one year deal, though unfortunately, these were trolling meme accounts. However, this could have sparked interest for Kaepernick to shoot his shot, as J. Cole shares a letter that Kap himself penned to the General Manager of the New York Jets.

In the letter, Colin Kaepernick requests the opportunity to join the New York Jets to manage/lead their practice squad. He notes that he is not requesting right away the QB1 position, and will do everything in his power to keep current starter, Zach Wilson, confident and prepared. Kap offers he skills at the practice squad to keep the team ready for any challenge, and highlight the skills that he still obtains, should they need his support on field.

Finally, Kaepernick shared that even through his time away from the NFL the past six years, his training has remained the same: Monday-Friday 5AM-8AM training on field and in weight room. The message appeared to remain dedicated to the sport, and passionate about the possibility of being able to return to the game.

Why did J Cole share the letter? His caption suggests that Kaepernick did not want the letter shared, but that Cole wanted to the world to see his dedication to the sport, in hopes that something big would come from it. Hopefully something does. Though, this reminds me of when fans were upset with Cole for not using his voice to speak on social injustice. It could be that sport is what he knows and where he feels like he can talk through his personal experiences to better the way people react to situations.

In any case, it would be really incredible to have Colin Kaepernick back in the NFL, to any extent. Would be here for a Kaepernick return to the NFL through the New York Jets?
