Cardi B Bodak Yellow Released: 2017

Bodak Yellow was the track that truly got Cardi B’s career in hip-hop up and running, back in 2017. She stared on Love & Hip-Hop prior to then, but if you were not a reality, drama-filled, television person, you likely got familiar with Cardi from Bodak Yellow. Yesterday, Cardi B shared the news in which she made history becoming the first female rapper to go Diamond with her hit single, which is equivalent to going ten times platinum. Bodak Yellow is said to have sold over ten million units to date.

Cardi B has definitely had her fair share of wins and losses over the past year. We went nine months without a single, then she shocked the world with WAP which is currently halfway to Diamond, going five times platinum after being released just eight months ago. She went from a potential divorce with Offset, to seemingly holding it down and living a beautiful life with her family. She taught people about politics, though many tried to take her down from this pedestal. Most recently, she even launched her own doll, in attempts to give back to young females in a way outside of her music, which is currently to risky for them to hear. Cardi has been a part of numerous “cancel parties,” but has ultimately kept her head high and continues to make business wins.

Bodak Yellow was an instant hint, but many wondered where the name came from, and why it sounded like Kodak Black. Well, in a Genius interview that came out shortly after the track was released, Cardi did pay homage to Kodak and said that the flow reminded her of Kodak’s song No Flockin’, so she was inspired by the newly pardoned artist. While Kodak has been the topic of discussion across the media, calling out people left and right for taking his quotes or antics, he was happy for Cardi B and her accomplishments. Kodak tweeted “Bodak Yellow went diamond damn right.” It seems like these two are on great terms.

Fans will be trolls, and there is no stopping that. It seems as though Kodak fans were coming for Cardi, saying that since she openly admitted to receiving inspiration from Kodak Black on the track, that he deserved credit for the diamond album. It is Cardi’s song, but in any case, that accomplishment is for everyone involved. Your writers, your producers, engineers, your label. There is nothing wrong with taking inspiration from someone, it literally happens daily. So, this obviously ruffled Cardi’s feathers a bit, and she did respond, saying that Kodak is getting credit for the song, and that they are both set for life, financially.

In the end, it is women’s month, and we need to praise Cardi for her accomplishments, and hope for plenty more diamond records to come.
