The Money Spread
3.9.21
Everyone wants to take credit for, basically everything and anything that they can take credit for. It has been this way for decades. Like, when Big Gipp claimed he was the first to do grillz, and that Future and Young Thug started autotune, and that the Migos started adlibs. It is likely none of them that were actually the first do any of these things, but perhaps they did make them popular. Well, Kodak Black is asking for his credit when it comes to this new move we see every rapper do in photos or videos. That is, spreading out a big stack of money across your arm.
Yes, there is a boat load of drama surrounding Kodak Black and others in the industry, because he is demanding his credit for starting the “money spread.” If we want to give Kodak any form of remorse, he has claimed that he started a number of different terms that he was not given credit for. Kodak says he started calling marijuana “broccoli” then DRAM and Lil Yachty blew up using the term in one of their songs. Additionally, Kodak claims he was the first to use the acronym WAP. Of course, this is Cardi B’s hit single, and not the first time she has admittedly taken inspiration from Kodak Black. So, upon hearing that others were claiming they started the “money spread,” Kodak felt it was necessary to demand his credit.
Lil Baby recently dropped a verse on Lil Durk’s new single Finesse Out the Gang Way, which Kodak Black is referring to specifically. In Lil Baby’s verse, he says “Postin' money on the 'Gram, I invented that,” suggesting that he was the first one to ever post a picture of him holding out his money on Instagram. Now, I do not really think either one of these guys invented posting a picture with your money on Instagram, but it is true that sharing on Instagram has grown in popularity since their generation of artists has emerged.
To Lil Baby claiming he started the trend to post money on Instagram, Kodak Black responds on Twitter. He shares a video, clearly stating that he has no issue with Lil Baby or anyone participating in this trend, but just wants to the world to know that he is actually the one to start the trend. Kodak shared a video of himself in 2016 with a large stack of money spread out all the way up one arm, and down one leg. In recent weeks, we have definitely seen this act done over and over by artists, and Kodak is just claiming his influence on the culture.
I think this is a bit crazy to even say, let alone get genuinely upset about it, but some people are. Pooh Shiesty, who has been blowing up since 2021 began, shared that he has lost all respect for Kodak Black, for his corny message. This comes literally about a week after Pooh Shiesty claimed Kodak as one of his top three favorite artists in a Hot New Hip Hop interview. So, it is a bit intense that Pooh Shiesty flipped the script on Kodak, who did not take lightly to the message.
Since hearing that he has “lost all respect” from Pooh Shiesty, Kodak decided to claim what was his from Pooh as well. Him and one of his crew members went on Instagram Live and addressed the “blrrrrt” that Pooh Shiesty infamously uses in his songs. Kodak claims that him and his crew also started the usage of the adlib, as well.
I do not think we will ever come to terms with who actually started what, but it does seem like Kodak Black and Pooh Shiesty will no longer be on terms for collaboration, which would have been fun to see. Let’s just hope that they can, as Kodak said on Live “keep it cute.” Neither of them need another case right now.
Kodak has been dropping new tracks since his recent release from prison, including new single Thugged Out featuring YNW Melly. Melly remains behind bars, but his team has never stopped putting in the work to keep the music coming, and keep Melly on time of fans minds at all costs. While it seems the song went over well from fans, Kodak actually tweeted that he was upset with the song, claiming the engineer had him off beat for his whole verse. If you are like me, you are thinking, when is Kodak ever on beat? But listening to the track, it is very clear that something is off. Melly was able to respond to the Tweet, and said his people are on it and going to fix it, so there may be a version two on the way.
