What makes someone an idol? Your favorite person at something? Someone that gives back thanks to their accomplishments? Or perhaps someone that wears multiple hats and does them all extremely well? Well, The Weeknd is the next musical artist to try his luck at acting. Whether or not he does it well as at question with the role he plays in new HBO Max Series, Idol.

The series Idol released the first episode earlier this month. The series takes us through the life of a female artist going through somewhat of an identity crisis, and falling in love with a club promoter, played by The Weeknd. Rumors have circulated the internet that the Idol series will not see a Season 2. Though HBO Max debunked the rumor and explained there has not been a decision either way, the reviews thus far have not been great. Mainly, due to feedback on the character Abel plays.

There have been scenes described as uncomfortable and awkward. Perhaps, disturbing. In a recent interview, The Weeknd states he wants viewers to be discussed by this character. He describes him as someone who “needs to be in control of every room” and whom “you can probably smell his cologne from here.”

This character honestly seems like a more direct version of the character Abel plays in his music where constantly describing the moments of cheating on women. So does he play it well? Do we like this film? How do we feel about The Weeknd’s acting career?
