Next Female Up: Lakeyah
10.14.21
The female hip-hop artists continue to flourish and grow, in quantity, and success. One of the latest to blow up, is artist Lakeyah. As a 20 year old artist from Milwaukee, Lakeyah is certainly making a name for herself with her recent successes; XXL Freshman Cover, BET Cypher, Funk Flex Freestyle, Breakfast Club Interview, and her QC label recognition.
Lakeyah was a 2021 XXL Freshman, and had arguably the greatest cypher from the bunch. She was in the group with DDG, Morray and Coi Leray, and crushed it from her team, to the whole bunch. Between Lakeyah and Rubi Rose, the ladies took the crown for the XXL Freshman cyphers.
Just last week, the BET Hip-Hop Awards took place, where Lakeyah got to take place in another cypher. Lakeyah’s BET cypher was with Toosii, Symba and Kidd Kenn. The whole cypher went viral, from Toosii’s storytelling, Symba’s immersive message, Kidd Kenn breaking the mold for the LGBTQ+ Community in hip-hop, and Lakeyah yet again having one of the best cyphers in terms of bars, delivery and overall talent.
Just yesterday Funk Flex dropped Lakeyah’s freestyle over at his station, and she yet again floated easily over the beat, which was actually City Girls Act Up beat. Within her Breakfast Club interview, she discusses how having bars is what she takes pride in, striving to bring female hip-hop back to the skills and what it once was, prior to over sexualizing everything.
Lakeyah grew up in Milwaukee and was a part of a female rap group in the small town. Her former rap group mate Rissa Fam was less than happy with her Breakfast Club interview, calling out Lakeyah for labeling herself as the better artist who had dreams bigger than their city. She aired out all their dirty laundry in terms of a previous fight they had, and claimed that the city of Milwaukee turned their back on Lakeyah, while she has the anthem of the city. Plus, she mentioned being upset that Lakeyah posted a video at a club with her song, without tagging her. Unfortunately, not everyone in the group makes the moves necessary to grow, but Lakeyah did just that.
At just 20 years old, Lakeyah successfully got herself recognized by Quality Control management, Pee. On an interview, Lakeyah said she kept DMing Pee, and having all her fans tag him in everything. He noticed and was watching, but once Lil Baby sent him a video of Lakeyah, he knew it was time to sign her.
Lakeyah recently dropped her Gangsta Grillz tape with DJ Drama on September 24th, including features from Moneybagg Yo, OG Parker, Tee Grizzley, Tyga and Bankroll Freddie. All this new promo is bound to lead to more new music, and with her QC team heavy behind her, surely some more notable features, as well.
