Polo G’s Top 5
1.19.20
Fat Joe and his Instagram lives have been one of the very consistent things to happen since the pandemic has begun. While Instagram Lives are getting old, or have been old at this point, Fat Joe keeps new guests coming on daily, and there is always a good conversation to be had. Tonight, he dropped a ton of news, and had some words with a young new hip-hop star.
First off, the rumors are true, Fat Joe and DJ Khaled have announced that they have created an Only Fans. They each post a video clip with each other participating in a one-on-one pick up game. The messaging says there will be a rematch on January 25th, and to subscribe to their Only Fans to see who wins. This is either a pure comedy play, or the two have something big in the works that they plan on releasing to a smaller crew as the initial announcement.
This is so funny to me, because I was literally just thinking over the weekend about how DJ Khaled kind of plays the role of Fat Joe does, for today’s generation of hip-hop. DJ Khaled has been around for over a decade now, but just seems to appeal to the youth in hip-hop, like Fat Joe does with some of the older heads in hip-hop. I thought some people would come at me crazy for this comparison, but now they definitely have something in the works, which I am excited to find out.
On the whole idea of Fat Joe having less of a presence with the younger generation of hip-hop, he made sure to flip the script with the special guest on his Instagram Live today. Fat Joe continued to tell the audience “you don’t know who I know” as he brought out Polo G to be the guest of the night, calling him the best youngster in the game right now. I have to agree with Joe on this one. But his Top 5 might have you questioning.
Polo G talked a bit about all that is going on in the world and how you have to adapt to certain situations. He was thrilled to mention that he has ton of new music coming out, that he will be dropping consistently over the course of the next few months. What tripped him up a bit, was when Fat Joe asked him his Top 5.
Asking someone their Top 5 is such a serious thing when it comes to hip-hop. It shows your type of music, if you are well versed in hip-hop, if you’ve studied the game and really know and respect the OGs of hip-hop. Some people have been trolled to no end by their responses. Especially Lonzo Ball, who was once caught saying “no one cares about 2 Pac and Biggie anymore, Future is the new GOAT.”
It was very clear that Polo G did not take this question lightly, and was almost hesitant to respond. He said “I’m not really a Top 5 kind of guy,” and continuously tried to justify certain responses or clarify what we were categorizing as Top 5. Fat Joe gave it to him straight, Top 5 of all time, on everything, dead or alive.
Polo G finally let it out, that his Top 5 favorite artists of all time, dead or alive, would be 2 Pac, Lil Wayne, Kendrick Lamar, Jay-Z, and Drake. I have heard Polo G say 2 Pac was his favorite in a number of interviews, and during his chat with Fat Joe he said he did not want to say Biggie Smalls because that would be cliche. I have to say that I think this is what Polo G truthfully considers to be a Top 5, but he is aware it is a very young Top 5, and people may not love it. I believe the most question he had was towards Drake, who if we are looking at numbers, he’s got to be the greatest. Though, when it comes to rapping, many think of him as the singing lover boy, instead.
However, Fat Joe gave him his props and assured him he said nothing wrong. Overall, these guys are all the best at what they do, and people from generations will have different Top 5s. I do not think any of these guys are on my Top 5, but I appreciate where it comes from and see it being actually a quite common Top 5 for hip-hop heads of today.
Polo G dipped after this question, surely nervous but ready for all the heat that would come to him. Fat Joe continued to praise the young GOAT. When discussing Lil Wayne, Joe mentioned that he does not like Donald Trump, and he never will like Donald Trump, but if he were to pardon Lil Wayne, he would give him a smirk and a head-nod.
Fat Joe also mentioned that although he thought he was done with music after the release of Family Ties, he was recently approached about a Soundtrack for an upcoming film, and has a new song dropping tomorrow.
