Use Your Platform, They Say

Latto: P**** 7.15.22

Remember two years ago, when the protests were going down, and J. Cole was cancelled for two days because he had nothing to say about it? Remember, when artists were getting dragged in the comments left and right when they were not speaking out on public issues, giving back to their communities, and using their platform to educate? Well let’s remember to keep that same energy when Latto drops her new single tomorrow.

Two days ago, Latto shared a TikTok video across her socials previewing a new track that she planned to drop “when her followers wanted it.” The snippet would not share too much, just that she was clearly mad at whoever she was rapping about. Latto was in her home, looking fabulous, and dancing to the track with her cat. Last night, she shared another preview, this time of what appeared to be the accompanying music video, and the cover art for the single.

The video shared includes several black and white clips of women protesting from recent weeks against the Roe Vs. Wade overturn. These clips shows women marching, crying, being arrested, being pushed around by the police, being sprayed with substances by the police, and more. Suddenly, the video cuts to Latto’s single artwork and a new snippet to the track that brings the meaning of the new single all the way to life. The artwork showcases the silhouette of a women laying down with her legs open in front of the Supreme Court. A bit graphic, but coming out of her are a variety of pink cords that spell out the name of the single, P****. In her lyrics she cites,My ovaries ain’t for you to bully!!!”

It is quite clear, that Latto is using her platform to speak on the Roe Vs. Wade matter, and how it is effecting women across the country. This reminds me very much when Lil Baby dropped The Bigger Picture, which went on to win multiple awards for writing such a great song that would educate his audience. The issue with Latto doing this now, is that some people are coming for her saying that she is using it as a scapegoat to amplify her career.

Twitter and all of their warriors seem to be angry with Latto. Tweets have suggested she is using a serious cause to promote her music, saying she be doing something to help rather than profit off of it, and more. However, Latto mentioned that she will be donating proceeds from the song to help support the cause. This was Latto taking her frustrations to the booth, letting them all out, and educating the world while doing so.

She made a great point about people criticizing that females in hip-hop rap without substance. They just sing about sex. Well, here is Latto ready to really educate everyone, and people are condemning her for doing so.

Are you interested in hearing artists talk about serious issues through music? Or do you just want them to stay quiet and put their money where their mouth is?
