Verzuz Season 2
11.5.20
The Verzuz music battles have been one of the greatest things to happen during quarantine. While we cannot go to concerts, and many of us our staying in doors, a little live hip-hop set from two of your favorites is always something to look forward to. Many hip-hop artists have participated, or asked for their shot for a battle. It has been a couple of months, but Verzuz is ready to come back for the winter second wave, and the first battle is going to be a good one.
T.I. is one of those artists who has been asking for a a battle for quite some time. He wants to go against 50 Cent to declare Atlanta hip-hop is better than New York hip-hop. I personally love the idea of these two cities going head-to-head, because they do have such defining styles and sounds that represent their cities so well. However, we all know 50 Cent was not having any part of this. Either way, T.I. did get himself a battle we can be excited about.
On Thursday, November 19th, T.I. will showdown with Jeezy in the first Verzuz battle of ‘Season 2.’ Two of three members, of the Mount Rushmore of Trap Muzik. What else could you ask for, other than for the third to be there as a big kumbaya, white flag moment? The two are considered to be friends, and have done a lot of hip-hop in the south, both being new introducers to the hip-hop kind of ‘trap music.’
T.I.’s catalog runs long, from 2001 to today. Jeezy was putting out CDs in 2001, but first went platinum in 2005 with Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101. While T.I. has endless radio hits and classics that can be played across radio stations and genres, Jeezy has always been hip-hop. That is what people are debating when it comes to this battle, and it is going to be a good one.
Joe Budden discussed this battle on his Job Budden Podcast which recently one a BET award. Joe initially dubbed T.I. the winner of this battle, based on catalog, but the others clowned him and fought their reasoning for crowning Jeezy their winner. The battle should be great, with lots to sing along too.
With the idea that a “Season 2” is starting, this must mean we will be getting plenty more of these. In recent months, Twitter has gone insane about who they would like to see go head to head in one of these battles. One battle that made the top cuz would have been Three 6 Mafia verzuz Bone Thugs and Harmony. Two groups together, I do not think we have seen this so far. Three 6 Mafia followed up briefly after Bone Thugs prime, and were each legendary during their decades.
This battle was originally going to happen independently, but Verzuz stepped in, thinking it would be a great match. DJ Paul from Three 6 Mafia recently explained this battle has not happened, because the climate was off and people decided not to go through with it. It is unclear if it was members of Bone Thugs, or Swizz and Timbaland, but perhaps there is a second chance for Season Two.
