Waka Flocka Dedicates His Life
5.26.20
The world knows Waka Flocka Flame for going hard in the paint. Nowadays, it looks like he is going hard for another reason. This past Monday, Waka shared on Twitter that he will be dedicating his life to suicide prevention and mental illness. May is mental health awareness month, and this is a great message from an artist such as Waka, but knowing his past, should we take him seriously?
Waka used to be best friends with Gucci Mane, before their pasts got them into trouble. They were both regularly doing drugs and when Gucci when under the influence he was known to lash out at his loved ones. Eventually, Waka was removed from Gucci’s label. Though Waka says there was no beef, it was evident that there was bad blood amongst this situation.
His own legal issues exist as well. In 2010, Waka was shot two times after an attempted robbery at an Atlanta car wash. Waka then got arrested after the police raided his house in 2011. Then in 2014, he was arrested again at an Atlanta airport when security found a loaded handgun in his luggage.
However, maybe Waka is a changed man. In 2017, he stared in a Viceland series ‘The Therapist,’ and was asked to speak on some harsh realities of what he has went through in his life. Waka has lost his own younger brother to suicide back in 2013. He continues his Twitter speech to tell kids that they are not alone, and it is a great thing to to want to live your own life. Waka shares that this will be the first year that on his and his brother’s birthday, which are just a day apart, he will accept that his brother is in a better place.
Perhaps Waka had an overcome of emotions and finally decided it is time to help others, rather than continuing to dwell on what we cannot control. Having a platform that he does, it is a great deal. Waka has previously dubbed himself a “Wack Rapper” and is happy with what he has accomplished in life with music thus far. It is interesting to think, what would your favorite rapper be, if no one ever listened to their demo tape they slipped someones manager when no one was looking? Now that Waka is over the hip-hop industry, it seems like he wants to help out a serious proposition that hits close to home.
Many artists and celebrities have been using their platforms to spread awareness of the cruelty and injustice that goes on in this world. I think that by sharing these Tweets, Waka has got to own up to it. But for what it’s worth, I think he should, and will do all he can to support these organizations.
