Wasting Time
7.1.21
While we are still waiting Certified Lover Boy to drop, Drake has released a new single, in collaboration with Brent Faiyaz. Brent Faiyaz has been releasing music since 2013, and has some hits under his belt. He was nominated for the Best Rap Sung Performance Grammy in 2018 for his song Crew with Gold Link and Shy Glizzy. So far this year he has released a handful of additional singles, including a collaboration with Tyler, The Creator. Brent’s biggest collab yet might just be in our hands, with Wasting Time, featuring Drake.
The R&B/Soul wave is not my particular favorite, but I have always found Brent Faiyaz to be extremely talented and under-recognized within the industry. Everyone wants a collaboration with Drake, but this duo just made perfect sense, and could help get people really back into Faiyaz’s music, as well as perhaps a little foreshadow into when we will be getting this new Drake album.
The song was released on YouTube about fifteen hours ago. Not a music video, just the audio over the single artwork. The track already has over 100,000 views. Each artist posted the artwork on their Instagram feeds, earning hundreds of thousands of likes. I am sure the streaming numbers are going crazy for this duo right here. Pharrell was also tagged in Drake’s post, as The Neptunes took on the production of the song, and of course the artwork is the notorious Pharrell figurines.
Getting into the song, Brent has the chorus and the first two verses. They are basically saying if you’re going to waste your time, why not waste it with me? I honestly did not love it the first time I played it. But now that I am going through a few more times I am definitely feeling it. Of course they are getting into their feelings and speaking to the ladies, trying to halt our hot girl summer.
I was a bit surprised to see Drake take his verse and completely rap over the whole thing. I would think that with someone like Brent that he would go a little more CLB and sing. But I do like the execution of the approach here which keeps the track lively by bringing in some extra energy in the back half of the song.
Of course, Drake has to throw in a one-liner for the girls Instagram captions this summer. I am absolutely calling it now. During the pandemic, you wanted to work on your self, get your mind, you body and your skin right for when we were able to back outside again. Now, you are at the beach every chance you get, and of course you are going to be posting about it. Look out for the new Drake quotes.
“You used to do skincare, but not you do swimwear.”
Overall, not my favorite new music, just being me. But, I am here for the duo and whenever you need a cute, slower song.
