Coi Leray, Nicki Minaj Blick Blick 3.18.21

Coi Leray is a recent XXL Freshman, been touring nonstop, and yet has had her fair share of haters throughout the internet. She is a trending super-star with a style like no other, that is true to her own no matter who gets in her way. Someone that has constantly shed light to her situation, and made sure she kept her head up when knocked down, is Nicki Minaj. Finally, the two have a single ready to be released, but it did not come easy.

Last summer, Coi Leray went on a festival tour, and was trending for all the wrong reasons. It seemed like each show she did went viral, for fans in the stadium standing still, unexcited about her performance. However, as someone that has seen her perform live during this time, she still came out with full dance routines and sang her little heart out, every time. She is a performer through and through, but the constant knock down would be difficult for anyone to handle.

Sending out alarming Tweets, and messages about quitting music, there was a handful of talent that would reach out to Coi and show her love. One of the more consistent ones, was Nicki Minaj. The two seemed to Tweet the same way. Use extra emojis. But there is so much more than that. When Nicki first popped up on the scene, there were no other females around at the time. Today, Coi stems from a social media background, and is creating an entire new style of hip-hop as she grows her fanbase.

Since Nicki Minaj has connected with Coi, I have seen the similarities continue to grow, even within their music. If you listen to the first verse of Do We Have A Problem?, Nicki Minaj uses a flow that is staple to Coi Leray’s style. Haters will say Coi copied Nicki, but Nicki has dozens of different flows and adapts to what is popular. I am certain that she did her research on Coi, liked what she heard, and knew that the flow would pop off when she recorded it on her own single. But, now Nicki is ready to share her platform to the utmost respect: a single together. However, it did not come easily.

Coi Leray also has gone through a lot with her father, Benzino. He is known in the hip-hop industry, and also for being an internet troll. This does not stop for family, as he has put Coi through the ringer on social media and Instagram Lives. Benzino even almost lost Coi Leray her Nicki Minaj feature, as Nicki had reportedly pulled the feature after Benzino leaked the single on his own terms on his social media pages.

Benzino told the world prematurely about the Nicki Minaj feature on Coi’s upcoming single, Blick Blick. According to Nicki, she pulled her verse from the single because she was upset that Coi did not get to announce the feature on her own accord. However, the label continued to reach out to Nicki, and after a one on one with Coi herself, she decided to push everything forward, and has since also shared the new single artwork on her own page as well, to be released on Friday.

Nicki is very chatty on Twitter, which is where she addressed pulling the feature. She also addressed how she loves all of Coi’s choices, similarly to how she did Bia when Nicki hopped on the Whole Lotta Money Remix. I definitely have been expecting this feature from Nicki, with how often I have seen her Tweet at Coi, and the similarities I have been noticing. However, she does seem to speak oddly against her features quite often.

It feels like there could be more to the story about why Nicki pulled her feature in the first place. She did the say thing when the Say So Remix released, suggesting that Doja Cat’s label would not leave her alone. Nicki may be the Queen to many, but the humbleness is not there. I truly hope that she went all out for Coi on this feature, and I cannot wait to hear what it sounds like.
