Coachella Week 1

4.19.23

Coachella is arguably the largest festival moment there is for music lovers, as well as a massive moment in time for fashion trends, large brand moments, and more. With week one in the books, it may seem like your news feed is laughing at you for not being there (or maybe just not remembering what happened). Well, here is a quick round up of what you missed!

  1. Fans call out Latto for “photoshopping” the crowd during her set.

Latto had a viral performance for many reasons before this photoshop situation went viral. She brought Lola Brooke on stage, danced and performed her heart out, and rightfully so rebranded her performance to Lattochella. However, the internet never wants you to win, so the internet trolls came for Latto when she posted a photo of herself addressing the crowd. Many people highlighted duplicated fans and features in the photo, suggesting she edited the crowd in her picture to look larger. Latto has since responded to the noise saying she would never edit a crowd, and was simply stretching the image to fit the social media specs. She has since shared videos that do not lie showing off even more of the crowd, and announced the release date of her upcoming single that was debuted during her Coachella performance. Put It On Da Floor drops this Friday.

2. Glo Rilla continues to show up in big ways

Glo Rilla has continued to prove she is a star and she is here to stay. Not only did she have a full choreography performance throughout FNF, but she also had major moments to hold the attention of a massive crowd. Lil Durk showed up to perform the Phatnall Remix, Moneybagg Yo came through to do his part in On Wat U On, and Glo Rilla also paid homage during his set to the late (and great), Gangsta Boo who paved the way for many like herself. The party did not stop here, because Glo Rilla performed again alongside Lil Durk this weekend on Jimmy Kimmel.

3. Metro Boomin brings out the heroes and the villains

Metro Boomin had one of the hottest projects of the year, and best believe he brought all the same energy to his Coachella set this year. The stage set itself was incredible. Graphics and smoke filled the set as if you were fighting to become a hero, escaping the fiery depths of hell. There were also different levels of elevation throughout the stage, allowing performers at a higher level, with dozens of dancers below them. Not only was the set up incredible, but so was the live of artists that came in for the assist, which included The Weeknd, 21 Savage, Diddy, Future, Don Toliver, John Legend, and more.

4. Frank Ocean pulls the plug … maybe more than once

Fans from home were excited to get to watch whatever Coachella Live Streams were available on streaming services. One of those sets, should have been Frank Oceans. However, it was shared that last minute Frank Ocean decided he did not want his performance to be live streamed. Whether or not this was a negative connotation because of this, the internet is belittling the performance that did go down in real life, and suggests that Frank Ocean did not even play some of his greatest hits. While Justin Bieber has spoken out and called Frank’s performance a true work of art, he has allegedly dropped out of her performance for week two.

5. Cochella fined over $100,000 for going past curfew

When you’re at Coachella, or any festival for that matter, who ever wants it to end? Certainly not the fans, or the artists who are putting on for thousands of their fans. It has been reported that Coachella has been fined $117,000 for breaking curfew each of the three nights of the festival, week one. Sunday night has a midnight curfew, which Frank Ocean went over by twenty-five minutes. Friday and Saturday have 1:00AM curfews which also went over by more than twenty minutes each, as well. Five minutes past curfew is a daily fine of $20,000, and every minute after that costs $1,000 per minute. The fines go towards Indio’s General Fund, which is used for operating costs, public works, and the police and fire departments.

Do it for the town, Coachella! What was your favorite part of the weekend?
