FX teaming up with Hulu has brought consumers a slew of new documentaries and series to get to know their favorite artists on another level. The latest that we can expect to receive has been somewhat of a longtime coming. Premiering April 21st on FX and streaming on Hulu, the story of Tupac Shakur and his mother; Dear Mama: The Saga of Afeni & Tupac Shakur.

Tupac stood for a lot of things in his life. To hip-hop, he is arguably the greatest of all time. Or at least in the top two. To the streets, perhaps a crazy, maybe violent kid just trying to survive. To his mother? A son. But did you know his resentment at times towards his mother came from her not being around, due to her job as a civil rights activist?

In the trailer for the series, there is footage from a young Tupac Shakur, explaining his mother’s role as a member of the Black Panther Party. He suggests she was never around, because she was constantly attending schools to speak to the children. Once this role is his mother’s life was complete, they got to spend much more time together, and he learned that she did what she could to protect him and his brothers from trouble.

Quoted from the FX caption sharing the trailer, “Afeni had a revolutionary story, Tupac helped her tell it to the world.” The new series, Dear Mama: The Saga of Afeni & Tupac Shakur will be released as a five part series, available on FX and Hulu April 21st.
