Megan Thee Stallion is probably the most talked about female hip-hop artist today. Some may go as far to say that she is the next Cardi B, Nicki Minaj, etc. I was at first a huge fan of Megan, but I feel pretty strongly that she will not follow in the suites of Cardi or Nicki. I would say that in order to follow in the shoes of one of those females, you need longevity, you need people to remember you, desire more from you, you need to put out albums and sell out arenas. Now, I am aware that a debut album, Suga, is in the works. If I eat my words later, I’m okay with that, because I was a fan. But we do not have a release date on this album, and by the latest recent drops and snippets from Meg, I’m extremely under-impressed.

First, I have a problem with the Cardi B allegations, just because of the type of music Megan Thee Stallion puts out. City Girls tried to do it, Saweetie is doing it, each and every Doll in the industry is trying to do. It’s the hardness to their tones, the beats they rap over, the vulgar lyrics, and confidence that these women portray to say that they can do it just as well as men can (the rap game that is). I think the City Girls would have hit first if JT didn’t get caught up with the law. I really think Saweetie is next up, especially if she keeps close with Quavo - get on the QC label like Cardi did, then talk to me about whose the next. I’m really rooting for Dream Doll because I think she has got the whole package, she’s beautiful, talented, she’s business oriented and she’s been working her ass off. Okay random Dream Doll rant, because you probably think I’m crazy for these comments. I’ve been watching her since she got kicked off of the Bad Girls Club on night one for kicking a girl in the head. I’ve watched her grow as an artist and a person. If you listen to her XXL Freshman Pitch from 2019, I promise you she was so well spoken, and probably the only one that made sense at all in their pitches. This year was female heavy, but I think she was robbed (honestly the past two years), especially after putting out her EP Life in Plastic 2.

So back to Megan, what is it that makes her stand out so much over all these other females that are also working super hard? Is it because she has a cool story to tell, since she’s doing this while also talking classes in college? Is it because people loved dubbing themselves a Hott Girl Summer, and eventually it caught up to everyone that it was Megan’s song? Is it because she got Juicy J and Nicki Minaj on her song whose main line stemmed from the City Girls!? Or, maybe it’s because Megan is that girl in the club that runs around screaming and becomes best friends with everybody. I would call it this. Megan has done a great job putting herself out there, being a party girl that no one can tame. I guess this is what we were all like in college, just in our dorms. I thought her and Moneybagg Yo were amazing at first. But then I think she got a bit too cocky with herself and her situation, and we’ve seen her with plenty of other rappers since (as friends or as more, I’ll leave that to your own opinion). I say this to say, people just have her eye on her right now. But does her music stand up to it? Does her music mean enough to rap music, to seek longevity?

I swear this tweet has been on my mind every time I have a conversation about Megan. I absolutely love ignorant rap music, vulgar lyrics, harsh beats, etc. This is how Megan got her shine, how your music gets played in the clubs, parties, etc. But if this is all you can do, how far can you take this? Anyone can rap about sex and diamonds, but talent comes from relating your story to your fans. Expressing yourself, trying new things, getting out of your comfort zone. Sure this tweet was made to be funny, but this is why I never thought Megan would be able to come out with an album.

Cardi B got real vulnerable with us on her album, talking about going through infidelity with Offset. She took us to her roots and gave us some Spanish on her new album. There were so many different levels of Cardi we learned from Invasion of Privacy, and that it why it was nominated for so many awards, and took home Best Rap Album at the Grammys, and Album of the Year at the BET awards. Nicki Minaj, I don’t really think I even need to get into. We’ve heard her do it all, and she’s been around for a decade now.

So basically, I don’t think Megan Thee Stallion has what it takes to put out an album that encompasses what is needed to make it a noteworthy statement in the industry. In order to have the success of those with the likes of Cardi B and Nicki Minaj. I think her song B.I.T.C.H that came out yesterday is bad. I feel that she was trying to sing on this song, or maybe it was just a direct response to this tweet above. It was like she tried to sing, but would rather be a bitch instead. I don’t think it sounded good at all, and the message to me was just weird. I really wasn’t a fan of Hott Girl Summer, because I don’t think her verses flowed or sounded good. Her freestyles are subpar. I just think Megan is doing too much, and I’m not sure that she is meant to be the mainstream artist that everyone wants her to be. Go back ratchet club bangers, and get your degree on time. I’m sure that’ll be better for you in the long run.
