Album Release: 2.28.20 “My Turn” by Lil Baby

Lil Baby drops his second studio album “My Turn,” with twenty songs on the tape. It is only his second studio album, but he has six mixtapes and thirty-five singles, so he really is using this one to show us he is here to stay. (you see the goats all over the album artwork?) I wondered about this one (Lil Baby), because he seems to fit in everywhere right now in hip-hop. But how long will this new southern rap fad be this popular? I feel like the south comes in waves, and this crew is much different than your Boogie, TIP, Gucci Manes of the south.

Speaking of fads, I couldn’t be more happy that the seven track tapes are fading away. Now it seems to be the exact opposite, so many people are putting out twenty track projects. I really wasn’t expecting Lil Baby to have this much work on this album, so good for him. He definitely has been putting in the work, and is trying to tell us he isn’t going anywhere.

As for my opinions on this album, I usually like to go track for track and discuss. I’ll do my best, but I’m not overly excited about a ton of the songs on here. I would say that there is not a bad song on this album. I do just think that they all sound the same. There isn’t any one particular song stood out to me the most. But if you’re like Ashley, I’m not going to be able to listen to the whole thing, what’s the top three I should listen to? Live Off My Closet, Heatin’ Up, Commercial. Note, is not including the hits, because you already heard and love them, i.e Woah, Sum 2 Prove. So there is your top five overall! Let’s get into it.

Track 1: Get Ugly

This song was dope, unfortunately it just isn’t going to stick on charts or in people’s heads. I would say this is because the chorus isn’t catchy, but the last verse, Baby goes in.

“Need my rims offset like Cardi B / This might be my hardest beat
Put the blame on Pee, he started me / Got the game from Big, he guarded me”

Track 2: Heatin Up FT Gunna

Lil Baby and Gunna, the duo of the decade. Obviously when the two come together, it’s going to be a hit. They have similar styles, tastes, I guess you can say they have similar sounds/tones, being two rappers from Georgia during the same timeframe of southern hip-hop. It’s not ‘Drip too Hard’, but it’s cool.

Track 3: How

Solo songs on a twenty song album are usually the ones you skip. I really like the beat for this song, but nothing overly exciting.

Track 4: Grace FT 42 Dugg

Personal story for this one. At work I was looking for some cool artists in Detroit. I found this kid, 42 Dugg, and I was like he is dope I would like to see if he would want to collab on some things. So I had my agency reach out, and they just never heard back from him. Well, wouldn’t you know days later he is performing at Yo Gotti’s Birthday Bash and announces signing Yo Gotti's CMG label and Lil Baby's 4PF records!? I was literally like, no wonder he didn’t get back to us, he was singing deals. I guess I found him right in time, or just a little too late.

42 Dugg’s intro verse to this song is low and raspy. I like it. Lil Baby blends into the verse, keeping the slow, steady beat. This song is cool, I definitely think Dugg should be able to tell his story on a big platform like Baby’s album, but I hope we get a banger from the duo soon.

Track 5: Woah

Woah is the first hit single off the album. I’m really into this song, it is topping charts globally, and will be remembered as one of Lil Baby’s greatest hits.

Track 6: Live Off My Closet FT Future

Here is one of the songs to make it to my top five. I really like this duo of Lil Baby and Future. As I definitely think that Future started this whole “mumble rap/SoundCloud rap” era, and became sort of a “King” in this space, Lil Baby is the current leader. Where I think that Drake and Future sound a bit strange and misplaced together, these guys belong on hit records together. The chorus is upbeat and definitely a radio hit that you could also dance to in the club.

Track 7: Same Thing

Sorry, but this song is CUTE! It is almost spring and it’s giving me spring vibes. Nice weather, hanging out with your favorites going on road trips or adventures. You know, a feel good song. You can’t not feel good and smile with the corky beat and positive lyrics. It’s a fun, upbeat love song, I feel like this has been missing in hip-hop for a few years. I am all the way for this one.

Track 8: Emotionally Scarred

I feel like I’ve heard this song before. I think it maybe sounds like ‘Chastised’ or something similar from a past album, but with a better chorus. The chorus on this song gives it repeat potential. I’m into it. But overall, pending on your mood, it’s a cruise tune, not a bump tune.

Track 9: Commercial FT Lil Uzi Vert

Classic Lil Baby beat. Drums in the background of all kinds of noises and instruments mashed up. I guess I should say a classic Tay Keith beat. You really can’t go wrong today with a Tay Keith beat. Tay Keith has worked with some big names, but I love him with the southern rap kids, it mashes so well. He’s from Memphis, so it makes sense. Even tough Uzi is from Philly, he’s with the sounds and fits it great here. I like his verse a lot. Maybe because I’m a Sagittarius.

“Diamonds cold as December, my vibe Sagittarius”

Track 10: Forever FT Lil Wayne

I wonder what would have happened if Lil Baby was around in Lil Wayne’s prime. Don’t hurt me for this, but I think this is a better duo than Wayne and Drake. I like the two together a lot. I think it’s something we haven’t seen before, but is so natural and fits greatly. It feels like Baby put the most of his energy into this one. I might even change my mind and put this one above the Uzi song after a few listens.

Track 11: Can’t Explain

One of those songs that just blends into the rest.

Track 12: No Sucker FT Moneybagg Yo

Moneybagg Yo and Lil Baby is my personal favorite duo. Something about Moneybagg being super hard, but also just loving love. I kinda love him. The two together always make something great, I’m super into this song.

Track 13: Sum 2 Prove

Here is the second single off the album. It’s been making its way to the top of charts. It’s definitely been top of the Rap A-List playlists on Apple Music for a while. I would say it definitely worthy of this. I like it a lot.

Track 14: We Should FT Young Thug

Slime time. The two did their thing on this one. I’m not sure if it’s enough to stick, but it is one of the better ones. There is like, creepy nursery sounds on the beat. Like a cradle, or the twinkly sound. It is creepy and sounds cool at the same time. One of Young Thug’s strengths, I would say.

Track 15: Catch the Sun

This is a slow, emotional song. But it is so soothly and catchy, I kinda like it. You can pick up on the chorus quick and sing along. It is fun.

Track 16: Consistent

Another solo song. Quite consistent with the others I would say.

Track 17: Gang Signs

I really like song, one of my fav solo songs that you’ve haven’t heard before. Fun and upbeat. The chorus feels like he was going for his own club hit here.

Track 18: Hurtin

I’m getting bored.

Track 19: Forget That FT Rylo Rodriquez

Not the #FreeRalo I know.

Track 20: Solid

The end.
