21 Savage, Metro Boomin Savage Mode II Release: 10.2.20

21 Savage and Metro Boomin announce the release of their album, Savage Mode II, which will drop this Friday. The original Savage Mode EP dropped in July of 2016, four years ago. The album went gold and hits ‘X’ and ‘No Heart’ were extraordinary singles at the time. 21 has continued to work with producer Metro Boomin since, and every time seems to be a hit. After a relatively rough 2019 for the artist, we are so excited to hear what he has to say next.

People may laugh and make jokes about 21 Savage being from the United Kingdom, the way he says knife, of raps about the Ms in his bank account. However, there is one thing you cannot deny of 21 and Metro, and that is their immense creativity. They have each allowed this to unfold over time, try new things and really come out on top more times than not. Typically, the announcement of a new album or project comes with a single from the tape. For Savage Mode II, however, the two artists released a trailer, as if this was a whole featured film.

The film can be found on YouTube or either of the artist’s Instagram Page. This trailer is dark and eery. It begins showcasing a castle that resembles the knife 21 Savage wears on his face. Other stone buildings, with owls flying through the air, coming directly towards you, through perspective. Then, you follow the owls, quickly and swiftly through the neighborhood, directly into a new building, which opens up to be the studio where 21 Savage and Metro Boomin are collaborating.

At this moment in the visuals, Morgan Freeman begins to narrate, explaining to listeners, how they define the term ‘Savage,’ ‘mode,’ and therefore, ‘savage mode.’ The explanation ends by saying.

Therefore, if someone is in Savage Mode, they are not to be f** with.

During this time, a hooded figure walks through the front door of a mansion where it is quite dark. They leave blood stains on the piano keys and other areas of the home. The frames from all of the photos on the wall shatter as the figure walks by them. As the lights flicker on and off like crazy, the figure walking down the hall ends up in the infrared lit studio standing above 21 and Metro. He holds up 21’s knife, and then they begin recording. It appears they are a 21 Savage and Metro Boomin stunt double, as they take off their ski masks and take over the studio, as two shadowy figures are now seen leaving the mansion.

As we move out from this room into the hallway of the mansion, another door opens, with blood pooling through the doorway all throughout the hallway as if a gigantic wave from the ocean was being held behind the door. Morgan Freeman at this points presents to us, Savage Mode II, as 21 Savage shares a snippet of one of his new songs in the background.

For a video trailer designed for a musical album, just under a minute and a half, this was super well thought out, and interesting. There is an entire story to be told here, and it definitely set the tone for what is to come on this new project. We expect 21 Savage to come hard, be a little creepy and eery, and just live up to his name to be a complete savage on the mic. The first Savage Mode tape just had that one feature, but a decent amount of names that came through to collaborate on the production side, like with Zaytoven, Southside, Sonny Digital and others. I think I would anticipate this album to be a lot bigger, and extend on both ends. It has been four years we have waited for the sequel to this project, and it is 21’s time to come through. He has plenty of insane features, and Metro would not be Metro if he was not so great at bringing together big groups of diverse artists.

The last project had nine tracks. This time around, I am hoping for around 14-17 new tracks, 5-7 features and a whole lot of heat. I played back the last six seconds of the video over and over to get the vibe from the snippet 21 shares. I think it could really go either way. What is saying actually may be legit, but the delivery is very much SoundCloud Rapper Esque. 21 really blew up in the midst of this group of artists, but really tip toes the border of old-school hip-hop and that genre of new artists. With the people he surrounds himself by, such as Metro Boomin, Zaytoven, Future and Migos, he does put himself in the category with the older new guys, which is a good position for him. I am hoping for a dope album this Friday.
