Occupational Hazard
9.23.20
Occupational Hazard, a term that means, a risk accepted as a consequence of a particular occupation. Also, recognizable as the name of Mozzy’s latest full length album in which he just dropped today. Mozzy is an incredible artist who always paints a perfect picture with his music. The title of the album is a message in itself. From running around in the streets to becoming a famous rapper and talking about it, there are risks every single day.
Mozzy has his own label, Mozzy Records, and works closely with Empire Distribution Records and Publishing Company. Prior to Mozzy’s own label, he was independent. I do think that being on his own for his entire career, may the reason why he does not get the credit he deserves. Somehow, these labels are always getting artists the extra push they need. However, Mozzy is the realest guy there is. His music in amazing, and this album definitely did not disappoint.
Like in most of his projects, Mozzy brought his team along for the ride. The album includes features from Celly Ru, Marco Mula, and of course his brother E Mozzy. Besides Mozzy and E Mozzy being blood brothers, most of the collective were all friends before the same. Their voices are different and compliment each other well, so it makes perfect sense that they’re all on the label together. Too Much Pride is a track that includes Mozzy, Celly Ru, E Mozzy and Trae the Truth. This is probably the anthem of the album. A serious message, but super positive, dedicated and motivating. A beat that you have to bop to, and a chorus you are going to want to memorize and sing it loud at the top of your lungs.
Blxst was on two of tracks throughout the album. He is someone I have been interested in learning more about. Signed to Red Bull Records, the up-and-coming artist sounds like a mix between YNW Melly and Torey Lanez or one of the new guys with the singing hip-hop voice. In the other songs I have heard with him prior, the Melly was coming through heavily. This song just sounds a bit more, pretty, if you will. They reference beating a case and coming home, but in way that is such a feel good song. You will want to pick up your partner and dance around with her singing what sounds like such a peaceful tune. It is nice. The second feature, comes with Wale on the track as well.
I still do not think Wale has ever made a bad song. He sings and raps on this track that talks about overcoming their struggles and how they are dealing with it today. Blxst sings another amazing chorus. Don’t Play Fair is just another song that hits home, especially during these times where we try to fight for justice, and continuously see zero results.
Tsu Surf is always an interesting feature on a hip-hop album. However, I feel like he has gotten a number of really great looks creating songs. While Tsu Surf may be more widely known for his Rap Battling opposed to song making, this is the area he wants to focus in. He is also signed to Mozzy Records, and I think his unique sound, aggressive demeanor, and insane ability to story tell through excessive wordplay, is a perfect match.
Speaking of perfect matches, I do love a YFN Lucci feature on the album. They both have really interesting, high pitched vocals that sound so good with trap music. I like this song a lot and can see it being one of the hits on the album.
Of course, there are plenty of solo tracks that are plenty amazing. I highly recommend turning on the Intro track and listening to it fifty times and hear what he has to say and all he has to offer. This album is super important, for everyone to just listen to and take it all in. Especially right now. Mozzy has always been able to give you a message, along with something to vibe to. This will for sure be on my repeat playlist throughout the week.
