Tory Lanez Freestyle Brings Trouble

Tory Lanez Funk Flex Freestyle 2021

On Monday, Tory Lanez posted a Tweet that he was not going to be on the LA Leakers, but he was on his way to see Funk Flex. The next day, Funk Flex released Tory Lanez’s second freestyle on his show. While many think he snapped, even more than his first round, of course, it comes with drama.

The initial tweet already had people thinking that Tory was dissing the LA Leakers. I was kind of confused by his message towards them, because it somewhat seemed like a diss but he also said “he would have to do it right.” The Leakers have been gaining a lot of popularity the past few months, with new artists going to see them because they have new music on the way. From the Migos, Polo G, J. Cole, IDK, they call came to perform to promote their new project. I do not necessarily think Tory Lanez is promoting a new project, just his new self.

Tory Lanez has started dropping new music like bombs once again, after his not-so-great of a situation last year. Most recently, he dropped a new song with DaBaby which broke the internet. He just shared cover art for an upcoming track with Kodak Black, as well as a snippet of a song with King Midas, and tons of other smaller projects. With being an independent artist, Tory has been able to work with whoever she wants, whenever he wants, and apparently that is all the time.

Back to the Twitter post, Tory said upfront he was going into the Funk Flex Freestyle with some things to get off of his chest. He showed up with a team of about ten people deep in the studio, and went in for about six minutes. This may have been about two minutes less than his first freestyle in 2017, but as crazy as it sounds, he came with more heat, more passion and aggression, more everything.

The main line that people seem to be talking about, is where Tory says:

“Shoutout to DaBaby, Roddy Ricch, and Lil Baby.

What I’m about to say is going to sound a little crazy,

but it’s true so don’t play me.

Y’all all would’ve got y’all awards if they didn’t frame me!”

This moment was pretty mic drop during the freestyle, obviously still claiming his innocence in the Megan Thee Stallion situation that went down last year. The three name drops are all guys on the top of the charts in hip-hop right now, who many thought were snubbed during the Grammy’s a few months back. Whether or not Tory Lanez had anything to do with it, he definitely shook the world with this bar.

Megan has not commented on the bar just yet, but she may have been too busy with her recent Sports Illustrated cover to have listened to it, yet. However, someone did, who was not happy with the freestyle for other reasons. That person is Cassidy, and though Tory Lanez claims Cassidy to be one of his favorite artists, Cass does not seem to think he is paying homage.

Cassidy is a super popular hip-hop artist and rap battle artist from the late 90s, early 2000s. He has begun putting on a few new works recently, including participating in a recent rap battle with Hitman Holla. Certainly someone you do not want to mess with, Cassidy clearly was not feeling Tory’s freestyle, per a recent post that he shared on his Instagram and Twitter page.

The post was a video of Tory Lanez from his first Funk Flex Freestyle in 2017, then flashing to his previous works. Then, new snippets from the new Funk Flex Freestyle, and more flashbacks to similar flows from Cassidy. Essentially, Cassidy thinks Tory is stealing his flow, and he is not too thrilled with it. The post caption says:

Not only did Cassidy tag Tory in the post, but he pulled tons of previous Tweets and comments about people comparing the two, and suggesting Tory is stealing his flows without showing respect to the artist.

Tory commented under the post that Cassidy is one of his favorite artists, and he has been paying homage, by giving him a shout on in the first freestyle, as well as freestyling over his beat in the new one. I personally always think there is an interesting fine line between “paying homage” and copying flow. It does not sound like this one is over.

Tory Lanez totally killed it, but may have caused a few new problems for himself. What do we want next, a Tory Lanez album, a Megan Thee Stallion diss track, or a Tory Lanez versus Cassidy Rap Battle?
