Verzuz Scorecard: Rick Ross vs. 2 Chainz
8.10.20
This past Thursday had to be one of the most fun VerzuzTV battles to date. No doubt, they are all great, from the talents, to the music, to the energy. However these two have hits, features and sing-a-long tunes like no other. There is absolutely no chance you had at just sitting down on your couch and listening to these guys go song-for-song. I for one, was envisioning myself at one of my favorite concerts of all time. 2 Chainz against Rick Ross? Nothing but boss verses.
Some do say the energy was a bit low, but I mean, the two were very much themselves throughout the night. Rick Ross had bottles of Belaire and WingStop in his corner, while 2 Chainz had 1800 Tequila and something rolled for days. At the beginning of the night, Rick Ross handed 2 Chainz a gift. Later on, to play off of one of his hits, 2 Chainz brought strippers.
2 Chainz took the opportunity to speak on why the hits he played were so important to him, while Rick Ross just claimed his boss status. Prior to the battle, it seemed like Rick Ross had the for sure win. After it was all said and done, some were left questioning. Perhaps 2 Chainz won, because he played all the right songs. Rick Ross showcased the variety in his catalog, where 2 Chainz went for all straight bangers. Though Rick Ross says this was just a warm up and he can keep going, we have to choose a winner. Let us take a closer look at the hits and break down who won the night.
Round One:
Rick Ross: B.M.F. (Blowin’ Money Fast) vs. 2 Chainz: No Lie FT Drake
These were definitely both songs to come out hot to. BMF is the spending money anthem. No Lie was definitely the song of the year when that dropped, which happened to be my freshman year of college. 2 Chainz also says this is the first song that won him a plaque, and getting Drake on a chorus is nothing to shy away from. However, I am going to give round one to Rick Ross. BMF does not die. At this point, No Lie no longer excites me.
Winner: Rick Ross
Round Two:
Rick Ross: Hustlin’ vs. 2 Chainz: I’m Different
Hustlin’ is another one of Ross’ classics. Every time you listen to this song you have to roll down the videos and just imagine yourself a boss. However, I’m Different was one of 2 Chainz first really big hit with no features. He switches the flow several times, and the punchlines are endless. Oh it is tough, I would call it a tie but I do not believe in ties here. I am going to give this to one to 2 Chainz.
Winner: 2 Chainz
Round Three:
Rick Ross: John, Lil Wayne vs. 2 Chainz: F**in Problems, A$AP Rocky, Kendrick Lamar, Drake
Do not get this one confused. John is one of my favorite songs, ever. Maybe random to many, but Rick Ross has always been one of my favorites. When everyone was claiming Lil Wayne the best rapper alive, and Rick Ross hopped on the hardest song of The Carter IV, I’ll never be tired of listening to this.
2 Chainz came through with an entire unreleased verse for F**in Problem, and shared how it became the hook to this song. This song, was absolutely legendary the moment it dropped, and would likely get people still going crazy at the bars if you dropped it today. Quite honestly, I am over it. But, I respect it. 2 Chainz takes this one.
Winner: 2 Chainz
Round Four:
Rick Ross: Rich Forever FT John Legend vs. 2 Chainz: Spend It
This is where people get confused. Rich Forever is no hard banger, until you listen to the lyrics. It is absolutely empowering, and you have to respect a man of Rick Ross’ size and presence executing a song with John Legend, that he himself brings pretty decent vocals to as well. Yes, Spend It is a classic, off 2 Chainz’ seventh mixtape, that helped him get on for sure. However, I will say this again, the Rick Ross song has forever longevity. Spend It was cool seven years ago but it does not make my throwback playlist. I’m giving it to Rick Ross.
Winner: Rick Ross
Round Five:
Rick Ross: Diced Pineapples FT Drake vs. 2 Chainz: Duffle Bag Boy, Playaz Circle FT Lil Wayne
Diced Pineapples is a classic Rick Ross love song that you cannot help but to sing along and feel to. It will absolutely always be this way, as well. Diced Pineapples is probably on the top of many’s favorite Rick Ross songs in his catalog overall. However, 2 Chainz also brings one my favorite from his catalog in this round. He addresses the fact that while going against Rick Ross and his extensive catalog, he will have to bring out the 2 Chainz, and the Tity Boy. Playaz Circle, Duffle Bag Boy is legendary. My favorite for years once it dropped. An excellent rebuttal, I will give this round to 2 Chainz.
Winner: 2 Chainz
Round Six:
Rick Ross: MC Hammer vs. 2 Chainz: I Love Dem Strippers FT Nicki Minaj
Boss, Hustlin’. BMF, all for sure Rick Ross classics. But MC Hammer is on an entire different level. When you listen to this anthem, there is not a second in the song that you want to stop jumping up and down. The punchlines make you think - did he really just say that?! It is one of the best from the Boss’ catalog. Similarly so, 2 Chainz rebuttals telling the ladies it is OK to act up in their living room, playing I Love Dem Strippers. This song is definitely a club hit and a real hit during the time, but it comes short to the energy of MC Hammer.
Winner: Rick Ross
Round Seven:
Rick Ross: Aston Martin Music FT Chrisette Micele & Drake vs. 2 Chainz: SupaFreak, Jeezy
Here, Ross pulls out another sing-a-long love song. However, it is the greatest one of all time. Any day of the year I want to cruise down the freeway with the top down blasting this song and singing at the tops of my lungs, no matter how single I am. 2 Chainz rebottling with the SupaFreak verse was absolutely insane. Such a great verse. However, there is no competing with the summertime love time anthem.
Winner: Rick Ross
Round Eight:
Rick Ross: Santorini Greece vs. 2 Chainz: Bandz a Make Her Dance, Juicy J FT Lil Wayne
Santorini Greece is a dope song from Ross’ catalog, but no one that I was expecting here. I do think that Ross added in a number of these to show off his versatile and ability to conquer the game at all aspects. 2 Chainz retaliated with Bandz a Maker Her Dance, which, let’s be honest, will never not make you want to dance. 2 Chainz came with all the hits, so he takes this one.
Winner: 2 Chainz
Round Nine:
Rick Ross: Ima Boss, Meek Mill vs. 2 Chainz: Rich As F**k, Lil Wayne
MMG overall is such a great crew. The love and compatibility when Meek Mill and Rick Ross get on a track together will also be special to me. This song has to hype you up and get you prepared to conquer whatever task you are about to take on in your day ahead. 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne is also an incredible duo. From ColleGrove and beyond, the two together only make hits. Rich As F**k was so much fun when it dropped, but Ima Boss is forever a mood.
Winner: Rick Ross
Round Ten:
Rick Ross: Free Mason FT Jay-Z vs. 2 Chainz: Feds Watching FT Pharrell
Rick Ross chose this round to show off his song he has with one of the greatest, Jay-Z. While many put Jay at the top of their “best rappers of all time” logs, it is important to showcase in your catalog. The song is great, but it is more of a feel good, meaningful song, then one you would bump on the regular. 2 Chainz admitted not having Jay-Z in his catalog, but he came back with a Pharrell feature, which is nothing to turn your head away from, either. Feds Watching is a super fun song that basically tells you just to look cool and do you, no matter who is watching. This one has to go to 2 Chainz.
Winner: 2 Chainz
Round Eleven:
Rick Ross: The Boss FT T-Pain vs. 2 Chainz: Good Drank FT Quavo & Gucci Mane
Good Drank was a really dope, chill vibe song. But there is absolutely no competition when it comes to The Boss. One of Ross’ classic both anthems, with a sing-a-long T-Pain hook? No brainer.
Winner: Rick Ross
Round Twelve:
Rick Ross: FuckWithMeYouKnowIGotIt, Jay-Z vs. 2 Chainz: Watch Out
Another Jay-Z feature and 2 Chainz is just over it! Watch Out was dope, but FuckWithMeYouKnowIGotIt is another attitude/mood for life.
Winner: Rick Ross
Round Thirteen:
Rick Ross: Devil in a New Dress, Kanye West vs. 2 Chainz: 4AM, Travis Scott
Rick Ross at this point is over the bangers and just showcasing his versatile, catalog, and proving that he can hang with the best. Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was probably his last really great project. Travis Scott heads are going to pull for 4AM, which is fine. I personally love Pretty Girls Like Trap Music, but talent-wise, you have to give this Ricky Rose.
Winner: Rick Ross
Round Fourteen:
Rick Ross: Tears of Joy FT Cee Lo Green vs. 2 Chainz: Big Amount FT Lil Wayne
The Cee Lo Green feature is a cool mix. The song is different, and sounds really great. However, it is not one that I would think stands out amongst the other conscious songs Ross has chosen during the battle. Big Amount is catchy and witty, and makes you want to try to keep up with 2 Chainz. I give him this round.
Winner: 2 Chainz
Round Fifteen:
Rick Ross: Stay Schemin FT Drake & French Montana vs. 2 Chainz: All Me, Drake FT Big Sean
All Me was another hit that was so much fun in college. We for sure played it every weekend and sung along to everyone word. Though, I do not think I would be as into it now as I was back then. However, “b*tch you wasn’t with me shooting in the gym” will live on forever.
Winner: Rick Ross
Round Sixteen:
Rick Ross: Pop That, French Montana FT Drake & Lil Wayne vs. 2 Chainz: It’s A Vibe FT Trey Songz & Jhené Aiko
This round was just uneven for me. 2 Chainz came with all heavy hitters, until Rick Ross went with Pop That. Obviously with a French Montana track, the energy is going to be heavy and the vibes are going to fun and upbeat. 2 Chainz went with It’s A Vibe for this round, which is a dope song, but on a much more chill vibe. So, there is no competition.
Winner: Rick Ross
Round Seventeen:
Rick Ross: I'm on One, DJ Khaled FT Drake vs. 2 Chainz: No Problem, Chance The Rapper FT Lil Wayne
Neither of these songs are my favorites from the two. I’m not huge on a Drake chorus or a Chance The Rapper chorus. Though, I think No Problem does have the longevity of a lifetime. 2 Chainz has this one.
Winner: 2 Chainz
Round Eighteen:
Rick Ross: I'm Not a Star vs. 2 Chainz: Birthday Song FT Kanye West
Rick Ross has a couple of hits that sound like I’m Not A Star. It was a one-liner from another song used to make an entire hit record. I do actually like when artists do this. I think it is fun, especially when not everyone catches on to what you are doing right away. However, the Birthday Song is one that must be played at every birthday and every funeral for the rest of the time. (maybe not the funeral, but just make sure the wish is granted).
Winner: 2 Chainz
Round Nineteen:
Rick Ross: Mafia Music vs. 2 Chainz: Big Bank, YG FT Big Sean, Nicki Minaj
Rick Ross goes for a low-key song here in the nineteenth round. A respectable track to have on the list, though the energy from Big Bank is unmatchable. Take me back to YG’s performance on the top of a car in the middle of the street. Not to mention, 2 Chainz had the best verse on the track, hands down.
Winner: 2 Chainz
Round Twenty:
Rick Ross: Rich Off Cocaine FT Avery Storm vs. 2 Chainz: Mercy, Kanye West, Big Sean, Pusha T
Even though Rick Ross followed up this song with an unreleased verse Kanye West’s Famous, this would not have been my choice to end the night. A magical track overall, but this is where people are saying that Ross chose the wrong 20 songs for the battle, opposed to 2 Chainz remaining on track. Perhaps if the two had spoken before and said, are we going to show our versatility, or are we just going to go banger for banger? Back to the Jadakiss battle, he said almost every round he was only going for street music, no R&B. Where 2 Chainz closes with Mercy, one of his biggest features of all time, he has to take the final round. Ross, I could have went for Stay Schemin’, The Devil Is A Lie, Trap Trap Trap, what about the song with Boosie, Drop Top Music?! No Wale joints at all!? Oh, I need him to go again.
Winner: 2 Chainz
Overall Score: Rick Ross (10) - 2 Chainz (10)
Welp … it’s a tie.
