Drake at URL NOME XI Event 6.12.21

Over the weekend, URL (Ultimate Rap League) hosted their NOME XI event, via the Caffeine TV app. The event consisted of a series of battle raps, with a line up that fans would not want to miss. While the main event was big, and there were other great battles, the special guest host was even bigger. Drake came through the URL NOME XI Event and made the prize money even bigger, by adding his own $50,000 on top of the $100,000 grand prize.

The battles titled NOME XI included some prelim battles between Ave vs. Jey the Nitewing, Danny Myers vs. Real Sikh, JC vs. Fonz, Mike P vs. Lu Castro, Loso vs. Jerry Wess, B Dot vs. DNA, Tay Roc vs. Chilla Jones, T-Rex vs. Eazy the Block Captain, and T-Top vs. Swamp. The “main event,” or UM3 finals was the ultimate battle between Geechi Gotti vs. Rum Nitty.

Ultimately, each talent would have three rounds against their opponent, and whomever the judges scored the winner of the battle would win the grand prize. The event had been promoted at $100,000, until Drake showed up, and whipped out an additional $50,000 of his own pockets to sweeten the pot. Drake discussed how much he loves and respects the artistry of battle rap, and how proud he was of the URL for continuing to make the battles more accessible to the viewers. Originally, he stated it was hard for him to be able to sign and view the apps, which are now free for viewers to watch on the Caffeine TV App, and Drake actually helped them accomplish this last year. When asked about Drake’s thoughts on lyricism and the new music today, he continued to praise battle rap, suggesting that the industry is a tough fight, but the battle rap crew continues to focus on their lyrics and is extremely well respected from rappers, singers, and even athletes alike.

If you are wondering what the hell Drake has to do with battle rap, this actually, is not the first time Drake has showed up to support the battle rap culture at URL. Back in 2015, he was in attendance at a battle, and was called out by Murda Mook for a battle. Drake laughed it off saying that he had to beat Tsu Surf before coming to battle him, an event that would be taking place in the near future. It was clear that Drake knew this was not his expertise, but he held himself with confidence and playful hip-hop fun. Needless to say, this turned into a much larger partnership, between the CLB and the URL.

Funny enough, Drake posted on his Instagram Feed from the night of the battle. He was in a massive group laughing, with none other than Murda Mook. His caption spoke about that night exactly, suggesting they were talking about the bars they prepared for each other, even though the battle never happened. Here, he finally came out and said that he does think he could win the battle. Perhaps he has been practicing, just in case.

Drake scored the battle 2-1, Rum Nitty, giving him the first two rounds, and Geechi Gott taking the final round. The rest of the judges had their own thoughts on the battle as well, but it was Rum Nitty who won the “Fan Votes.” When getting ready to announce who would be taking home the cash prize, Rum Nitty stepped in and said “you already know, we’re splitting that sh**!”

Fans seemed ecstatic by the outcome, saying it was the fans that won after a stellar night from all parties, and that it ended in such a positive manner. Geechi and Nitty celebrated together afterwards, and of course, took a selfie with Drake.

URL has announced that the next event will be Summer Madness XI, including two headline events: Murda Mook vs. Reed Dollaz and Tsu Surf vs. John John da Don. Are you a fan of battle rap? If so, do you like having Drake around?
