Tory Lanez, DaBaby Skat 6.14.21

It feels like forever ago that Tory Lanez previewed a crazy music video, including DaBaby, where they were dressed as priests performing the exorcist prayer to a zombie-like-looking-woman. Finally, the song has been released, and the video shared, as well. Many are calling this the video of the year, with the insane visuals and storytelling throughout. The song is called SKAT, and was directed by Christian Breslauer, aka @christhedirector.

In just eighteen hours, the music video already has over 1,800,000 views on YouTube. Basically, the video continues to get more and more wild after each and every scene. From pigs in police hats, hilarious uniforms, from cowboys, the priests, to racer drivers, boxers, and even a Michael Jackson impersonator. This music video will have you go from laughing, to being scared, back to laughing again.

Back when the collaboration between the two had first leaked, people questioned DaBaby rocking with Tory Lanez in such a way, after the Megan Thee Stallion drama. DaBaby has a number of hits with Megan, and they seemed to have a pretty tight bond. After the Tory and Megan situation happened, it seemed like everyone was taking sides. While Megan fans were ready to cancel DaBaby because of this move, Megan Tweeted that the song was an old recording and was not cleared.

Well, now it is here, and we may have to check in with Megan again on this one. While Megan claims this was an old recording, I think they went back to work on this one a bit. There are definitely a few bars in here from Tory that are subliminal to the situation that happened between the two artists. DaBaby also disucsses not doing shows til Corona is over, so it could not be that old. However, each artists definitely seemed excited and ready to go throughout the video together.

Tory Lanez opens up the song, and is pictured driving a cop car around in a bucket hat and puffer coat. There is a large pig in the background, wearing a police hat. Clearly, Tory is sending a message to how he feels about the authorities in blue. It is a bit questionable that the following clip shows Tory Lanez in a drop top with the guys around him beating up another man on the ground. and then continuing on to turning into a cowboy who shoots up the entire rodeo at a bar. But anyways, he mostly gloats about the women he gets, and the fact that he is now an independent artist.

The line that really got me was when Tory Lanez said:

Won't lie, lil' b*** had a n*** down
But now that I'm out of my feelings
I'ma stack the money so tall in the crib
It be lookin' like the roof came out of my ceiling

Tory Lanez certainly gets loads of women, and spoke about a new relationship since the Megan Thee Stallion case, so sure, he could be heartbroken by something like this. However, I think this is a Megan subliminal. He was lost when the whole thing went down. He lost a good friend in Megan, he lost fans, sponsors, and is still waiting on whether or not he will be sentenced for the charges being held against him. But in this light, what else can you do but remain positive for your own sanity, and look at what you do have. There is no doubting that Tory made money off his last project, and would continue to do so for the new projects that he put out. Being independent, he is getting it all, too. A new track with DaBaby? Now you are onto something.

The chorus is super fun and sing-a-long-able. This has potential to be a massive summer jam. Tory’s flow sounds familiar to some previous work. But the bars a new and catchy, and something that will certainly stick for listeners to rock with.

Finally, DaBaby comes in the for the second verse, and instantly makes you laugh. The term SKAT, which is the name of the song, is in reference to a Dodge Charger Scat car. So, naturally, DaBaby is rapping while in a race car, zipping through a track. His opening bars are:

I whip wrap the Scat the same color the Lambo
I pull up orange and brown, they both look like Reese's

I really am just wondering what made him think of this. Perhaps it is a true story, but you could have chosen any colors in the world, but you want to wrap your cars to look like Reese’s!? Personally, I love Reese’s. I just thought this was a hysterical opening bar.

DaBaby’s next scene is getting into an altercation with the police after celebrating the race car win, with Tory. They each have a history with the law, so it seems like them showing their fans they are above it all.

Certainly the most notable scene, is with each of the guys dressed up like preachers. They hold a cross and Holy Water, performing the exorcist prayer to a zombie-like-looking-woman. It is earlier in the verse, but DaBaby does say:

I be givin' the Holy Ghost to hoes, they see me
They get to passin' out and screamin' out, "Jesus!"

So, essentially they are comparing themselves to the man above, but I think the real idea behind this scene was just that extra wow factor.

Similarly to Tory Lanez laughing at his struggles when it comes to the police and beating up others, DaBaby has a scene where he is boxing the camera man. Someone whom has been arrested numerous times on literally just punching someone, it seems like they knew what they were doing here.

The two next get together once more for the end of DaBaby’s verse. Tory Lanez is in a yellow Lamborghini, while DaBaby is in a while Bugatti. However, they are not full sized cars. The cars, and their bodies, are miniature, while their heads remain the same. They look like bobble heads, or toddlers with grown men bodies. This is just another shock factor within the video. A nice touch, bringing the cars once more to align with the title of the track.

Finally, the song closes out with the chorus, and the music video scene is something else. Tory Lanez is dressed up like Michael Jackson in the Thriller music video. He has a team of zombie dancers around him, and the dance is on point. Overall, it seemed that the track was mostly fun, and that is what they wanted to do with the music video. Tory can sing, and he can dance as well. Being the newly independent artist he is, it makes sense to show off the variety of the skills he has a musician, in all forms.

While we talked about the Megan case a lot with this track finally releasing, I feel like most people are over the whole situation. With that, I do think this could be a massive summer track. It is fun, up beat, and easy to sing and dance to. The music video is completely something else. One of my favorites is the behind the scene moments, which you can find on the directors page. From the green-screen moments, to the videographers really getting into the performances themselves. Tory Lanez is back, watch out.
