Kehlani Speaks on YG Breakup and More
5.9.20
Kehlani released a new project on Friday, where she let out a lot of steam and emotions on her past relationships. She followed up the album release with a Breakfast Club Interview where she hesitantly spoke on her break up wit YG. The couple has been on-and-off for the past few months. Though the world was shocked at first since each party had recently left a previous relationship, including children, we were all in for this new couple. Two beautifully tatted and musically talented souls, in love together. What could possibly go wrong?
Kehlani and YG both have shared their deep love for each other, and shared it publicly. They dropped a song together, Konclusions, where they expressed their mutual love for each other despite their once rocky relationship. This song dropped on Valentine’s Day, just three days before Kehlani dropped her single titled Valentine’s Day, which intensely described their breakup. The couple that just shared with us their beautiful love story and said they were going to ride through it all, now days later, are breaking up over an alleged cheating story. What a harsh reality to have to come up with a breakup diss song to mask the love song that the world was dying to hear from an epic musical duo.
Just a few months later, Kehlani releases her fifteen track R&B project with features from Lucky Dave, James Blake, Masego, Tory Lanez and Jhené Aiko. Entitled, ‘It Was Good Until It Wasn’t,’ Kehlani continues to share her about the toxicity of the relationship with YG, and the back and forth of trying to fix things, to their ultimate conclusion. The album was originally supposed to drop on her twenty-fifth birthday, which was April 24th, but it was delayed due to the coronavirus. While the label wanted to make sure they could properly produce music videos and get the correct amount of press and buzz over the album, Kehlani took it upon her self to do everything from the vicinity of her own basement. From the album cover to shooting music videos, Kehlani bought all kinds of new equipment to get it done while at home. This definitely helped me realize why it has been hard for artists to put out music during this time. It also shows how insanely talented Kehlani is. Not only is her voice absolutely insane, but she is passionate and dedicated to her craft.
With that being said, there is a lot of deep thoughts and emotions on the album. Kehlani mentions that she chickened out of the first request for a Breakfast Club interview, because she knew that she was going to be grilled, and was not ready to speak about her relationship. However, this time, she was very ready. In her song, ‘Valentine’s Day,’ Kehlani describes text messages she found on YG’s phone, suggesting he ran away with another female to France, and discussed having a child with this woman. To Kehlani, this was crossing boundaries that the two had set in their relationship. When asked what happened between the couple, Kehlani said to go listen to the song, and that she did not want to get too deep into the situation. However, she shared that she found things on his phone, that were too much for her to handle, after already going through so much with the man. She claims they had an open relationship, and because the doors for communication were left so widely opened, this was crossing the line by keeping it all a secret.
No matter what Kehlani was asked, no matter what she said in her songs, she did not once speak badly about YG on this interview. Truthfully, she smiled reminiscing on the positive times they had together. When asked if YG ever apologized, she smiled again and said he filled her yard with rose pedals apologizing, and multiple times sharing how big his heart is. Though they do not talk anymore, their last conversation was to remain as civil musicians in the same industry, with respect for one another. They each wish each other well.
It is a sad end to a beautiful (from a far glance) relationship, but you have to do what is best for both parties. To further get into the interview, Kehlani shared that YG was actually the first artist to shoot their shot, once Kehlani moved to LA to start her new life as an artist. They have an inside joke called “five years in the making,” because YG had told others that he had been waiting five years for their relationship.
Kehlani also managed to speak a lot on mental heath, during times of losses, and during these times of mandatory stay at home orders. She expressed carving out time for yourself and not being afraid to ask for help when it is needed, is the most important thing you can do for yourself. Finally, when anxiety is running strong, take a moment to breath and think about all the things you are thankful for that you do have. Those literally, should be that you have all your limbs, you have hair on your head, and you’re breathing.
She is a very strong, emotionally intelligent woman, who absolutely killed it on her latest project, which she says is her most proud moment of her career.
