The King & I
6.16.22
The Elvis movie is gearing up to release in theaters on June 24th. Press, excitement and noise around this film have been monstrous, as it brings a chance to reflect on what we are taught is one of the greatest icons in music, in general, of all time. What is also brings is interest to who the producers and directors found worthy enough to land a spot on the King’s soundtrack.
Soundtracks used to be everything when movies came out. I remember my Uncle buying me the Longest Yard Soundtrack when it first came out. It was produced by Eminem and had original tracks from his entire label. A soundtrack sets the tone and energy for each scene in a film. When the film surrounds an icon in music, the soundtrack has to be nothing less than spectacular, as the artists are asked to represent, for Elvis Presley.
This soundtrack in particular is said to have original songs and records from Elvis himself, and dozens of others. So far, Doja Cat has released the first single from the soundtrack, titled Vegas. Super fitting when you think about live performances, music, and flashing lights back during Elvis’ prime. Doja wears many caps, and rapped her way through the song, with a softly sung chorus that reminds me of the sneaker women singing in Chicago.
Plenty of additional notable artists are on the roster to have original music on the soundtrack. Denzel Curry, Jack White, Jasmine Sullivan, Stevie Nicks, Tame Impale, Swae Lee, Diplo, new XXL Freshman Nardo Wick, and next up to drop: Eminem and CeeLo Green.
Yes, those names were written together, and are releasing the new single, together. Eminem and CeeLo Green are due to release the next single on the soundtrack, The King & I, today at noon. Eminem has previously shared they were working on a track together for the movie, and the day has come that we will get to hear what the two have in store.
CeeLo Green certainly has the voice of someone who would be on an Elvis soundtrack. Eminem has a lot of star power in music, which would make him a really exciting fit for the soundtrack. Putting the two together is different, but they are both so focused on studying the ins-and-outs of music, that I believe they would both be willing and able to try something new, and make it work.
I believe it is about storytelling for these two. With the track title, The King & I, I think these guys pay homage to Elvis, and highlight different aspects what it is like to be a King. I am expecting Eminem to rap on the verses and have CeeLo sing the hook. Will follow up with thoughts on the track after the release today at noon.
Check out Elvis in theaters next weekend!
