The Uncle vs. The Marshall

Eminem, Snoop Dogg

It takes a lot to become successful in the hip-hop industry, or the music industry alone. To become successful over a number of decades, is an even larger accomplishment. In a world of so many one-hit-wonders and people attempting to change the entire concept of hip-hop, one would hope that the legends and classics of the space would get along. Perhaps even come together at some point. On the contrary, it seems like everyone’s favorite uncle, and everyone’s favorite white rapper, have formulated some sort of late rap beef.

Back in July, Snoop Dogg went on the Breakfast Club to chat all things hip-hop. It seems like a storyline always comes from a Breakfast Club interview, and this was no exception. Snoop Dogg have Dr. Dre his flowers, calling him one of the dopest producers of all time. The two have a great past together, and plenty of songs during the N.W.A days. So, this compliment comes to no surprise, but things start to get interesting, when he cites that Dre gave Eminem his entire career.

It is true that Dr. Dre was able to give Eminem the platform he needed for success. However, words from Snoop Dogg felt mighty bold, when stating that other people may put Eminem in their top ten rappers or lyricists of all time, but he did not think so. Snoop Dogg thinks that the best of Eminem is all thanks to Dr. Dre, and would not put him in his top ten artists. He listed a name of artists from the 80s that he felt Eminem could not compete with, but explained that that is still, his brother.

Since Eminem remains a student to the game, of course he got wind of this interview. Eminem recently released ‘Side B’ to Music to be Murdered By, and responded to the comment. In the song Zeus on the album, Eminem essentially disregards Snoop Dogg as an artist, and just refers to him as a dog.

“And, as far as squashin’ beef, I’m used to people knockin’ me
But, just not in my camp
I’m diplomatic, ’cause I’m tryna be—
Last thing I need is Snoop—doggin’ me
Man, dog, you was like a (Yeah) damn god to me
Man, not really (Haha)
I had dog backwards.”

It is interesting because, Eminem has gotten in the habit of responding to people when giving shade to him as an artist. Almost always, he ends up apologizing and regretting it. Potentially, this was when he was taking things to far like the instance with Tyler, The Creator. I do not see this bar being a real diss in anyway. If the two had any sort of relationship, which Snoop made it seem by calling Em his brother during his interview, I would hope that Snoop would simply take it as a bar, laugh about it, and move on. However, that does not appear to be the case.

Over the past few days, fans are assuming that Snoop Dogg finally got around to listening to the album, and hearing what Eminem had to say about Snoop. There have been a number of Instagram posts suggesting tension on the mind. First, Snoop writes “People who can’t communicate think everything is an argument.” This was followed up a day later with “Back in the day if someone hated you, it meant you did something WRONG now a days it means you did something RIGHT!!” It remains unclear whether this has anything to do with Eminem responding to Snoop Dogg’s comments in a song rather than in real life, but of course that is what the fans are thinking. Many have been hyping up the comments, and some are asking Snoop to pick up the mic and show us how he used to get down.

Eminem is not the only one to release new music. Snoop Dogg recently did some new music with NBA Youngboy, and put out his own Funk Christmas two-song project. Would you want to see these two battle it out on the mic, or come together with something classic!?
