Tyler, the Creator

Tyler, the Creator got his start making headlines as a troubled teen, and has blossomed into an incredible and inspirational artist of all senses of the term. Tyler has his own apparel brand, is nominated yet again for Rap Album of the Year, and has a lot more to come. In a recent interview, he mentioned that while he has much more to look forward to, it may be the end of Tyler, the Creator.

Some artists change their stage name from when they were in high-school to when they make it big. Tyler, the Creator, has seemingly stayed true to his stage name since he was thirteen-years-old. In a recent interview with Fast Company, Tyler, the Creator shared how he came up with the name Tyler, the Creator. It was at age thirteen that he had a separate MySpace account for all his art and ideas, which became more popular than his friend MySpace account. His name on the account, Tyler, the Creator, began to catch on, and it stuck with him to this day as his stage name. However, it may be the end of the name.

Tyler shared his full surname is Tyler Okonma, pronounced, o-ko-ma. In recent projects and albums, Tyler has included his full name on the album covers, writing “all songs written, produced and arranged by Tyler Okonma.” He also shared that growing up, he did not like his last name, because he had never heard of anyone else whom had a name similar to his. Including his own father, and his side of the family, whom Tyler never knew, making it a difficult name to take pride in. However, as Tyler has gotten older, he has come to appreciate the name, and enjoys the way it looks and sounds. That is, especially, when written in all caps: TYLER OKONMA.

It has been suggested that we will continue to see Tyler, the Creator, put his full surname onto projects moving forward. Will he pull a Brother Love? A Snoop Lion? Sex? We will have to wait and see, but it is his full, birth name, which he encourages everyone to familiarize themselves with.

The discussion went out to talk about Tyler getting his fashion sense from elderly men, and his relationship with Virgil. Tyler suggested that when he shared with Virgil his idea of Golf Le Fleur, Virgil made dozens of calls and set up meetings for Tyler with all the folks he knew, in order to make his dream of the apparel line come true. This interview was specifically to celebrate the launch of Tyler’s luxury apparel line, including a pop-up shop currently on the mountain tops of Malibu, California, where Tyler was hoping to host Virgil, and thank him for all the help he has contributed, to Tyler’s own success. With that, he will only continue to work harder, at all forms of his craft.

The Golf Le Fleur website mentions that the store itself, will be a traveling site. During the interview, Tyler mentioned that he wants his consumers to be able to come into the shop and see where the inspiration comes from, based off of the location, the decor, the music, the workers, and the overall vibe of the place, which makes sense why it will not remain in one location. Though, in order to get the full experience, you will want to stay tuned for when the store will make it’s way to a town near you. Shopping is available on the website for travel pieces, accessories and fragrances. The brand does carry apparel, but it does appear currently that this will just be sold in stores for the time-being.

A fashion designer, a musician, a rap star, an artist, in every sense of the word. Tyler, the Creator, TYLER OKONMA, Golf Le Fleur, which is your favorite version of Tyler?
