Red Sox Devastation
2.10.20
“I Believe” is like my favorite term of all time. When the Red Sox hadn’t won a World Series in 86 years and everyone thought we were cursed for life, there were the “believers.” I always believe in the Red Sox, even when they seem to be down and out. Similarly, I didn’t think this trade would actually go through. I truly feel that Mookie Betts AND David Price, belong in Red Sox uniforms. They belong here, they bleed Boston, and I am certain that they would have loved to stay, if the team would have negotiated with them a bit.
David Price, the first pitcher whose jersey I’ve ever owned. I was pumped for David Price when he first came to the Red Sox. Our pitching sucked when he got here, and he was exactly what we needed. He definitely didn’t have the greatest of seasons, and went through a lot here. But he always gave it everything he got, and he grew his family here. Stats may be mediocre compared to what we wanted out of the guy, but a sad loss no doubt.
Mookie Betts is the tough one, that not a single soul in Red Sox Nation wanted. We haven’t had a franchise player since David Ortiz, and we saw that in Mookie Betts. Word on the town is, Mookie is coming up close on a deal like those of Mike Trout. Trout currently has a 12-year $430 million deal with the Angels. We believe after Mookie’s one year deal with the Dodgers, he will be seeking around a $400 million contract, surpassing Manny Macho (10 years, $300 million) and Bryce Harper (13 years, $335 million). Mookie is undeniably top 3 outfields in baseball, today. His bat is outstanding, he is fast, he’s smart, and he is so young. He has so much baseball to play, he has had David Ortiz as a mentor for some time, and I can’t see him not taking this knowledge and becoming this franchise player for whoever is able to give him the money that he deserves.
The Red Sox seems to always get rid of my favorite players, this one hurt big team. I didn’t think Mookie would actually leave Boston, but in the end, this is their job. Baseball to us, but business to them. I’m not happy, but I understand, and I will be keeping my eyes out on the Dodgers season this year for sure.
As for the Red Sox, I think they’ll be fine. They have some things to figure out, but they always do. When asked if the Red Sox can win without Mookie Betts, David Ortiz replied, “they won without me!” I’d have to agree. We’re hurt, and will miss our favorite players, but we will continue to be the greatest team in baseball. (don’t come for me Yankees fans)
